Rattles in Dash/Centre Console

Hi guys I am new here, can anyone help me with rattle issues in my Passat sedan? It's an 06 V6 4Motion and there's some squeeking and general creaking coming from the area around the stereo head unit in particular the silver surround to the head unit.

Is this easy to remove? I am assuming some silicone spray or dry lube applied to the joins will sort this but don't want to start pulling off trim pannels and make things worse.

Jas, welcome to world of VW. The thing will squeek & rattle it's head off & drive yo ucrazy over time. either live with it & ignore it or have a go at fixing it like I have. I removed some fascia panels & applied felt tape to the inside surfaces. Seemed to help in some areas but it's impossibel to get to all the problem points. Anyway, if it makes yo ufeel better, start with the worse culprite sqeek/rattle area & see how you go. Silicone spray does dry out after a while. Dry lube may be better (I wouldn't know for sure) but that will only help with squeeks. With rattles, you need to create a firmer interference point without increasing the chance of squeeks (hence why I used felt tape). Anyway, good luck but I don't like your chances of getting rid of them!

Yes, the '06 is notorious for a squeaking dash...

Annoyingly, VW acknowledged this by upgrading the material used for the dash trim - the newer ones have a brushed metal look as opposed to our cheap-plastic look (it just looks like its gonna squeak hey!).

Hounded my servicing dealer until they finally tried fixing (some backing tape i think). Got rid of a lot of the squeaks, but not all.

Watch out for creeking around door trims too. This is due to the rubber trim drying out. Apparently it needs a special lube that they charge an arm and a leg for. I whinged and got them to treat it once gratis. They say don't try your own lube like silicon spray - otherwise all bets are off if you complain to them about it.

How's your DSG going? Just had mine replaced under warranty. Gonna start new thread to explain.

DSG seems to be going OK. Takes a bit of getting used to though. In normal D it hunts around a bit and can be a bit aggressive in kicking down a gear sometimes. Otherwise seems OK?

i had a squeak from the glove box door which was very easy to fix with just felt to pretension it when closed. worth checking. i found by driving along with glove box open and no squeak. although it was intermittent and seemed to be worse with someone in the front seat...


but sounds like yours is a bit more internal.

I have a squeak from the glove box lid area in my MY07 TDI sedan.
Also seems worse when there is someone in the front passenger seat.
I've tried adhesive-backed foam tape and folded tissues. If we manage to silence the squeak it reappears after the passenger leaves the car then gets back in. Squeak disappears if the glove box lid is left open but then the passenger is not happy.
This is the only problem I've had with the Passat and I will notify the dealer of the squeak when the car goes for its service before the warranty expires.
Not confident that there is a fix as this noise has been mentioned in previous threads.

i will have a close look at where i put the fix in the glovebox and advise. worth a try.

Has the felt stopped the squeak?
Where did you put the felt?

The biggest rattle I had from the front of the car ended up being the rain sensor surround tapping against the windscreen.

If it feels loose at all, it will rattle on a slightly rough road.

ours squeaks like a school boy choir
it's everywhere
apart from the dash, bottom of A pillar, top of B pillar, rear drivers side window, suspension bushes
we gave up a while ago because there's just so many. A bit like the weeds at my house

ours is an April 06 build
