Received the replacement unit and sent the old one back.

I've been thinking about how the newer VW oil grades are thinner and if this may have affected the initial lubrication and wear in..

Also, the brass metal filings from inside the piston (created from the rough spring grinding against it) would have to go somewhere - this could be a possible cause of the scratching on the outside of the piston.
