Thanks all, will keep you updated of progress.

A thought - wondering if I should take it to the dealer where it was purchased/serviced by previous owner (last serviced 45k in Jun '20) or my local VW where I had the inspecton done. I'm inclined to think I'm more likely to have success with the originating dealer that has the whole history of the car than with a new dealer who doesnt.

I did ring the originating dealer to validate the service history and check if there were any warranty repairs or claims against the car, and they confiemd the only issue was an infotainment software update during last service and a brake complaint not long after delivery in '18, nothing further.

Check the front brake pads first! if they are worn and disks rotors are worn on edges , it could make similar sound. I recently discovered that Front brake system on Tiguan has some major factory flow desi, which could make lots of different noises , which can be even mixed with bad suspensions loud banging noises . Rubbish front brake design on 340mm clippers

Sounds like something is loose in either the suspension or an engine mount.

Thx for the tip - possible but not but not probable. Front pads/discs are at 7mm and 28.94mm according to pre-purch inspection. One thought that crossed my mind is it could be ABS system making noise as I had heard something simialr on another car previously however all will be revealed in the fuillness of time as the saying goes.

Good luck! Do let us know how you get on - many of us are in that 3 year range now and just in/out of warranty. Murphy's Law; that is the time any kind of design flaw or common fault rears it's ugly head.

It’s a really strange sound. I just listened to both videos.
If it’s the gearbox, I’m a bit stumped as to what part it is. It happens so fast and (in the videos) at low load/engine speed) so suddenly it doesn’t sound like gears doing something bad.
Plus it’s happening after the car is moving, not as it takes off.
    I’m really stumped.
I hope it turns out to be something simple and cheap (or free)

sounded like my old volvo going into reverse unless you did a double clutch in neutral first, came with a thump also.
Goodluck with VW mate, maybe a non dealer specialist could diagnose it before hitting up VW for a warranty repair.

Unexpected gearbox(?) noise coming from car during acceleration

Christ just listened to the video no mate that’s not normal at all. I’ve had 3 DSG vehicles and none sounded like that. Mind you all three cars had the gearbox replaced with the current Tiguan having the job done twice. The car is now faultless touch wood and sounds better than any other Tiguan I drove demo, new or otherwise. Once oil is up to temp, Smooth with no clanking and shifting is precise with no slip. It was a nightmare getting there but great when it does.
My Golf R had the gearbox replaced and the haldex even stopped working under warranty replaced. Kept it for 3 more years before selling to my sister who still owns the car and loves it (MY11). No issues. But yeah you need to get that replaced along with the mechatronics unit.

It could in the rare occurrence be your engine mounts are loose and fixing them aligns the gearbox better but I would be getting my stuff replaced.

As for warranty you should be fine. ACL should cover drivetrain for at least 5 years give some manufacturers offer 7.

Hey man, I logged in just to tell you it's a 2nd gear synchro 1000%, been there. I had that fixed under a warranty.
