    Ignition Push to Start Button

The button has been reluctant to work on the first push as it used to and the other day I thought it was not going to work at all so some investigation was called for. I did a search and a Skoda owner had kindly been there before me and posted a video on how it needs to be pulled apart and the contacts cleaned. This is just a heads up if you have the same problem and mine is working fine now after an overhaul today.

    Ignition Push to Start Button

Good to hear you were able to revive the switch by cleaning the terminals - I hope it works long term. My start/stop switch was playing up also (2015 Golf GTI - was having to push the button 2-3 times to turn on/off the engine) and I bought a new one (VW Central sells them, they are $140). Works perfectly now.

I've run into this problem also with the car 1 year out of warranty VW customer care said that they may only provide part goodwill.

So I think I'll try cleaning the switch first with alcohol/cotton bud and see if that fixes it. Disassembly/cleaning to happen on the weekend...

We had ours replaced by the dealer about 6 months out of warranty, parts and labour

I think it depends on how hard the dealer pushes and your relationship with them

Whilst this option might not suit everyone, there's also the option of purchasing a genuine VW part for Chinese-market VWs via aliexpress.

I haven't tried these switches so I can't vouch for them, however I've purchased interior parts from this seller to replace scratched piano-black trim bits in my car and the parts that I received were all genuine, with correct markings and packing labelled "FAW Volkswagen". Caveat emptor and all that jazz

I know a few people have bought the AliExpress buttons. The only issue is that they are for RHD Tiguan and when installed the STOP/START lettering is upside down

It still works like it should just looks a bit odd.

I pulled my switch out today and cleaned the contacts. Works 100% now.

    Here's a quick guide:

    1) Remove the gear lever trim by using a trim tool. Start at the top as there's clips at the base.

    2) Undo 2 x T20 Torx

    3) Remove surrounding trim

    4) Disconnect start/stop wiring. You'll need to insert a small screw driver to disengage the locking tab. Next pull out the silver spring clips. Careful as they'll spring out and go where you don't want them to.

    5) There's 4 little clips that need to get disengaged to open up the button. One is hiding under the sticker:

    6) Get a cotton tip and some isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts. Reverse the process to put everything back together.

Oh, I wasn’t aware of that issue! Thanks for the heads-up!

Nicely done regarding the switch cleaning too!
