Agree to a point but if they’re on the car for 5 months of the year then you may as well have something you enjoy. Plus I think these are 18’s so run a bigger sidewall tyre.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for the inspiring wheel pics! I've finally just ordered a set of wheels, and am after some advice on tyres and tyre widths.

    Car: Tiguan Wolfsburg RLine
    Wheels: 20x10 et35
Height: Stock height and stock springs. I don't intend to lower, or if lower in the future, it will be maximum 30mm

Some questions I have on tyres:
    1) I'd like to run a 275 (or maybe even 285) rear. But I assume 275 will cause rubbing on full lock in front. To solve for this, can I run staggered - e.g. 265 front, 275 rear?
    2) What would be the widest I could run in the front without having rubbing issues or making contact with components?

    3) I've checked out the speed % differences, but the calculator assumes all 4 wheels the same. How does the % speed change if I'm running staggered wheels (like in #1)?

Also, did some calcs on different options vs stock 20" suzukas:

    1) 265/40 R20 = -1.11%
    2) 275/35 R20 = 1.64%
    3) 285/35 R20 = 0.64% (I assume you can't run this wide in the front)

    Any advice would be awesome!

On a 10" width rim the recommended tyre size is 265-275. 255 is stretched and 285 is slightly oversize. Check here for recommended tyre sizes: Tire Width for a Wheel/Rim Size Chart

Mercedes runs different widths back to front, however these are carefully matched so that the diameters are almost identical. The Tiguan is designed to have all 4 wheels the same size. If you run a mismatched set front/back it will cause the wheels to rotate at different speeds and the ABS system to think that you have constant slippage. Also you will limit your ability to rotate tyres so I wouldn't recommend it for both these reasons.

Put the wheel/tyre options into an online wheel fitment calculator to check how the fitment looks compared to stock. Here's stock vs. 285/35R20 on 20x10+35: https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.ph...=10&offset2=35

You'd have to compare diameters and speeds but I wouldn't recommend running anything that wasn't within ~0.5%

Personally I'd stick to 255/40 all around, however if you really wanted to push it then stick on 2 x 285/35R20 on 2 wheels. Put them on the front and run around the streets to see if you get clearance on full lock and over bumps etc. If they're fine stick 285's on the other 2 for he rears and job done. If they rub then stick the 285's on the back and put 255/40 on the front. They're the closest tyre size and if you're not lowered you're going to have the best chance of them fitting fine. I believe there's people running 275/35 but not sure if anyone is run 285's.

Awesome nuggets of advice there, thanks Tigger!

To be honest, I am not hell bent on getting 285s to work - just wanted to see whether the upper limits would be possible on our cars.

Taking your point on staggered being a potential issue, I'm crossing that off as an option. Which means I'm more likely to just consider 265s all around, and that hopefully should clear everything.

Just a follow up question on size variances then. You mentioned that you wouldn't consider anything over +/- 0.5%. So you wouldn't recommend the 265/40 I quoted? I was thinking -1.11% would be ok?

    Cheers

I just think running a staggered setup is compromised in terms of being able to rotate your tyres and get best life out of them. You can only swap left to right and there's not as much benefit as being able to rotate all 4.

Running 265 all round isn't too bad. Actually it's extremely close size-wise to the stock Tiguan size of 235/45R20 which came standard on the 20x8 rims fitted to my 162TSI Sportline.

If you're going to run a staggered set-up this is the kind of difference you want to try and achieve: https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.ph...=10&offset2=35
