Cost of extended warrranty

Hi guys,

I just got quoted $2750, from the finance manager, for VW genuine extended warranty with unlimited kms.
It's easily $500 more than I expected to pay and thought people were getting them for $2100ish.

For those who have bought extended warranty, what did you get (VW genuine which is underwritten by Allianz or another 3rd party one) and how much. To make it easy if you can specify the spec of your vehicle (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline) otherwise if its in your sig I'll just refer to that.

Personal opinion. Don't waste your money.

Effectively what these extended warranty schemes are is a way the dealer can tie you to his service department, and its inflated prices, while you pay for the privilege.

It's a plain and simple scam.

You have protection under consumer law that cover you for major failures after the warranty has expired anyway. The ACCC are enforcing this very point with Ford at the moment. Any minor failures you could fix yourself for significantly less outlay than what you pay for the extended warranty. You also save a lot of money by using an independent mechanic.

You find also that things you might think are covered by the extended warranty are the same that's covered by your initial dealer warranty but in many cases that's not the story.

Don't waste your money.

Regardless of value for money etc. in fairness to the VWA sponsored extended warranty, one is not tied to the dealer for servicing. The warranty remains valid as long as the vehicle is serviced by a qualified person in accordance with the service schedule. Of course, any extended warranty claim can only be processed by and work carried out by a VW dealer (not necessarily the selling dealer).

If that's the case I stand corrected.

Given VW, and most makes to be honest, propensity to try and wriggle out of even the normal new vehicle warranty if all servicing haven't been conducted at a dealership I'm surprised to learn that they aren't mandating dealer service for the extended warranty to be valid.

If that what it says in the fine print then fair enough. I'd get out the magnifying glass though to be certain.

Yep spot on don't go near the stealers oh i mean dealers for servicing the mark up is 67%!!
Yes 67% they only make a small profit on selling you the car apart from the paint protection rip off they try to get you with which is 70% profit for them

I also got the extended warranty for 2.3k mainly for all the gadgets and gizmos with the new cars if anything stuffs up i know its expensive but peace of mind and all that lol

Only dealers have the latest software/firmware and they never release them to third parties. If you want the latest updates unfortunately you have to pay the mark up. It's not ethical or even legal I know but that's how the industry works.

Spoke to another finance manager at another dealer, informed me the genuine VW extended warranty is $2000. This is only for vehicles not yet registered (ie. FOB which mine is). For cars already registered (demonstrator vehicles) then they can only be covered by aftermarket warranty which is $2750. Both of them are covered by Allianz Insurance.

Coming from a Mk7 Golf Highline (which had 3 clutches replaced in 3 years - only squeaked b/w 2nd and 3rd gear, never affected drivability), the extended warranty is just to put my mind at ease in case the DQ500 gearboxes have issues (which doesn't seem to be the case so far).

I thought one was different to the other, the genuine VW warranty vs the one underwritten by Allianz.

I was under the impression the genuine one is no different to the factory 3 year one that if something breaks it will be covered and they just fix it at the dealership with no fuss to you. The other you have to fill out paper work and send it off to Allianz for assessment etc..

I've received conflicting information but I have the PDS for the Genuine VW Extended Warranty and on page 5 it states it is underwritten by Allianz Insurance.

The process in making a claim after the 3rd year may well be as you suggested.

I'm going to go through it fully soon but so far has a reasonable amount of stuff to help them wriggle out of a claim. Will decide after I've gone through the PDS properly.
