    2021 Tiguan R Line Purchase

Hello, I'm Paul and new to this forum. I'm considering purchasing a white 2021 Tiguan R Line and was just wondering if i could get some honest opinions from Tiguan owners (2nd gen) and their reliability and any issues they have had with them.

Would you recommend one? This would be my family SUV which we would use for road trips/holidays as well as daily commute to work.

I'm coming from a 2008 VE Calais V 6 litre so this will be my first VW (I've always been a Holden man).

Do many of you do your own maintenance/servicing on on your Tiguans once out of warranty? How do you find it? I've mastered working on Holdens over the years but VW is new to me. I notice i would have to buy a electronic scan tool to reset service interval reminders and scan error codes?

    Appreciate your honest answers.

    Thank you,

    Paul.

I don't own a Tig yet but they will be the same as any internal combustion car. When I get mine, I'll be working on it myself.
The only thing I am not sure of is the DSG service which is at 60k intervals. I'd be happy to do that service with a private VW/euro specialist, and do the engine oil changes in between myself. You're going to need a set of torx screw drivers and torx sockets.

I'm not sure about a scan tool but I got one of those knock off VAG K+ Can cables off ebay a few years ago as I could use it on my subaru with FreeSSM to check and clear codes, reset ECU/TCU etc. so I'm going to try it with VCDS lite. Not sure if this can clear service indicator lights. OBDEleven is very popular as it allows you to make changes to the car like turn off auto start stop as well as check and clear faults.

From what i've heard common issues are a leaky water pump and thermostat housing which usually shows up and is replaced within the warranty period. The other common issue is a ****y start button on models equipped with start buttons. Hopefully a Tig owner can provide more info around this. not to say these issues may have been fixed in the 2021 facelift.

A a family SUV I’m very happy with my Tig
Great fun to drive especially if you get a stage 1 tune
The infotainment unit is easy to use and good size and placement
I’ve had a few recalls and some minor issues covered under warranty, d services are more expensive than the Japanese brands I used to drive, but all in all, I’m glad I got one

    Welcome Paul

We have a MY21 Allspace R-Line since Jan and it’s been reliable in driving 7,000km so far.

We previously owned both a 7.5 Golf Highline Wagon for 3.5 years and 70,000km and a Polo latest gen TSI85 manual.

The main issues we had with the Golf were a rattling window which took 10(!) visits to the dealer to finally resolve. The water pump also failed about 2 years in meaning the car had no fluids and luckily the on board computer detected this and we had it towed by VW to repair under warranty. Other than that it was good - the safety tech on all the VW cars we’ve owned has been really good and has saved us from silly mistakes a few times - and I can’t live without adaptive cruise control, lane guidance and auto parking now after having it in all the VWs.

The MY21 Allspace doesn’t have lane guidance from factory but you can manually activate it using OBDEleven - I wrote instructions on how to do it in the other thread.

The r-line Tiguan Allspace uses 50% more fuel than our Golf Highline wagon did but it’s a much heavier and more powerful car so that’s to be expected. I think the 132 would be a good balance between power and fuel economy but I don’t think they’re selling them at present.

    Cheers

Thanks for the replies. Its very much appreciated.

Does the OBDEleven software allow you to reset the service reminders and is there a electronic log of what maintenance has been performed on these cars or still paper based?

Today I will place a order for the car. Car dealer says it could take 5 months as it needs to come from the factory.

YES IT DOES and VW keep an electronic log of services and recalls done on car. You get a paper with whats been done on it

Under warranty I would get Dealer servicing as they look more favorably should anything go wrong just out of warranty

The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to use the correct APPROVED 504/507 oil in it. Nothing else despite what you may think is better.

Yes it probably will and is worth waiting for. Writeup about it in todays Courier Mail.

Mine has done 9000km with absolutely no problems, Had one software update done and thats all. Gets serviced at the dealers.

Thank you. Looking forward to getting mine. While under warranty I will let VW do all service/maintenance.

FYI you don't need a scan tool / OBD11 to reset service intervals.
Depending on if you have the digital or analogue cluster, the procedure is slightly different - but a quick google / youtube search will show you how. Very simple.
I change my own oil & filter in between 15km intervals and it's very easy.

I've had my Allspace for 2 years with no issues despite it being built in Mexico. Would I recommend one to the average punter or my mother who's going to keep the car past warranty? No. Its servicing costs are expensive (think you pay double vs Rav4 in first 3 years), price tag is higher than mid suv rivals, questionable reliability after warranty period and VW Customer Care being poor.

That being said the 162 is catered to towards dads that want a bit of sport in their car and the engine EA888 is the best in its class, better than CX5 Turbo. Also, what got us to choose the Allspace over the Rav4 Hybrid was the 2 extra part-time seats and extra boot space. I feel the non-Allspace really only has the engine as a distinctive feature over its rivals but at a $10k premium.

But RAV4 have CVTs, questionable styling and ****ty infotainment. And the hybrid is only really good for city driving - on the open road it’s no more efficient since it won’t be charging the battery.

I’d choose a Tiguan, standard or Allspace, over a RAV4 any day of the week - servicing costs are only one aspect of car ownership, and certainly don’t add to the enjoyment of a car.
