Hello can anyone help with P0011 code

hello everyone.I Have a passat 2012 v6 with 186k on the clock. Went for a drive today and went to overtake revved to about 5000rpm and when i got off the freeway the car would not let me go over 2000rpm. So i had to drive all the way back from rye. Plugged in the scan tool and this is what i got.

    P0011
'A' camshaft position-timing over advanced or system performance bank 1

    VVT monitor
    Test ID #81
    Test value -19.61
    Minimum limit -3.76
    maximum limit 25.00
    Status fail

    Test ID #82
    test value -15.00
    Minimum limit 12.00
    Maximum limit 17.00
    Status fail

Now, i am thinking when i went to over take and for this to happen straight afterwards that my timing chain could have slipped a couple of teeth. It is possible that one or some of the sensors are faulty but i am thinking my timing chain skipped. Has anyone ver experienced this before, and any advice. How much to replace the timing chain. Thanks

With some luck its just one of the following sensors that has given up and no longer working correctly....

    - Cam angle sensor Bosch cam angle sensor
    - Crank angle sensor https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285552117181y

Perhaps give TTY Euro a call (located in Morabbin) to get it looked at. Hopefully the timing chain is ok and its just one of the sensors.

There is also a timing chain tensioner which thankfully can be quite easily accessed and replaced if need be.

But if its the timing chains themselves then I hope you have some $$ available - its a pretty involved job. Gearbox needs to be removed etc. And then "while you are in there" you should replace the rear main seal, and depending on the condition of the dual mass flywheel - possibly change the flywheel as these go bad after a while.

If your scan tool can measure values, search for 'phase' and check the phase angles on the intake and exhaust -5 to +5 is the spec.

Unfortunately, it does sound like chains, the 3.6 is known to need chains at around 150-200k depending on how well it was serviced.

How does it sound on a cold start? Could you listen to the area between the engine and transmission on the left side of the car?

Thanks for your help guys. I took it to my mechanic today, and he reckons it could be oil pump issue, which is a lot cheaper and easier to fix. Fingers crossed. But i might have to put aside some money to get the timing chain done and like you guys suggested also do the clutch and rear main seal. I did get a couple of quotes $4500 to do the timing chain. Does this sound excessive? But i love the sound of this engine and willing to fork out when necessary, i guess this makes either a sucker or an enthusiast.

Again thanks for your help guys it is much appreciated.

Thanks for the help. On a cold start it sounds like it has a huge lumpy cam in it and i got the suitcase muffler deleted a couple of weeks ago, i did notice a hissing sound as well so there is a vacuum leak somewhere as well. Where the exhaust manifold is it does sound a bit louder as well. It's at the mechanic now, it is what it is now i guess.

Thanks again for your help it is much appreciated.

PCV valves commonly leak on these, there is a little hole just above the pipe connection in this pic, place your finger over it while the engine is running and see if the hiss stops, there is a repair kit so you don't need to replace the whole valve cover.

What made you mechanic think it was the oil pump? Did he mean the oil pickup?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the oil pump runs from the timing chains.

Edit: Also not saying what it is or not, like anything a proper diagnosis is needed, good luck

OK cool, i will have to check the pcv valve, where can i get the repair kit from please. I drove the car to the mechanic today, he thinks maybe if the oil pressure is low it might cause the issue with the fault codes. There was oil at the top of the engine where the valves are so it wasn't dry. Yes i think you are right the oil pump does run of the timing chain. Is the timing chain kit for this engine (my car) which is the detuned version of the 220kw (mine is a 206kw) the same kit? Also where can i get a workshop manual for these cars? I subscribed to the Haines online one but that is pretty basic. I am almost tempted to do the timing chain myself, the last time i did a timing belt/chain was on my 300zx 25 years ago. I am feeling enthusiastic, plus i am a sucker for punishment.
    I really appreciate your help.

That's the one, RKX was the one I used. worked well. I did the valve cover gaskets at the same time, if you look closely at my pic above that's when I was doing it, I also had the oil leak around the top.

Where did you get that info, the B7 Passat came with the same 220kw BWS engine the R36 did, even with a newer MED17 ECU and a few other tweaks.

Put your rego in here Just a moment...

If the engine number starts with BWS, then that is what you have
