this is a guide of how to fix your mk2 golf parcel shelf...... well how i did it
my parcel shelf has the infamous speaker holes that have also made it cave in the middle. so i thought it needed some stiffening up to last for ever!!! (yes i may have gone a bit over the top)
first of all... to rip off the old fabric
where the speakers holes are, we want to cover it up so... i cut out a rectangular shape, so i can splice a piece in.
grab some chipboard/plywood whatever material the same thickness as the shelf.
then cut the piece about 12mm larger than the hole you've just cut in the shelf (leaving 6mm on each side)..
to splice, chamfer all edges on both the outside of the insert and the cutout to make the piece sit neatly in the cutout.
after both are fitting nicely, place some epoxy on all chamfers on both mating sides.
the stick down and place some weight onto the parts.
after epoxy has set, cut some fibreglass out to glass the underneath side of the parcel shelf
and also, because my parcel shelf has a massive bow in it i made up some strips of timber to stiffen it up.
next step, glassing.
