Just wanted to post back and say I inspected the radar unit, reseated it and cleaned the connector a few months ago and have had no problems since.

I had to remove the silver grill - bumper stayed on. I tried without removing the grill but I couldn't disconnect the radar connector and I was flexing the grill too much in the process.

Removing the grill was tricky with lots of stiff plastic clips making loud noises. I had to reach inside the grill and release the clips as I pulled the grill out.

The connector for the radar unit was also very stiff and the release tab is unfortunately located to the rear, hidden between the radar unit and the radiator. I had to use a flat bladed screwdriver to depress the release tab and pull on the connector. There were a few bruised knuckles in the process. The radiator fins are sharp.

The radar unit itself is just a friction fit onto three screw heads.

The whole thing was a bit of an ordeal but it's all sorted now.
It seems that the plastic polymer that VW uses is not very stable and seems to perish with age. This makes all the plastic tabs and loom connectors very stiff.
