2020 Golf GTi (7.5) Jolt/Jerk when egressing from a parked position - help?

Hi All,

I’ve written about this before but its just so annoying and I’m getting now where. Car is soon to be four. Dealer do what they can (search for TSB I guess) but otherwise nothing.

Symptom – The 2020 Golf GTi 7.5 jerks/jots when in ‘D’ egressing from a parked position. Isn’t reliably repeatable. Jolt/Jerk strength can be subtle or rattle the keys in the console.

Here’s the observations (so far)
• Car is stopped/parked. Engine off
• Car is started, drive selected and forward motion
• Occurs between 1-3 kph
• Incline or flat. Never noticed when parked on a decline.
• Occurs when steering straight or turned. Partial or full turn again no real difference.
• Can occur parked overnight, or 5 minutes (ie ducking into shops)
• Can occur cold/hot
• Can occur Winter or summer
• Zero rain ie pads are not rusted to rotors
• Has not occurred if reverse is selected first (and movement rearward) and then drive that I can remember.
• Never occurs once the car is started and has moved. i.e doesn’t happen again until stopped and parked for between 5 min and 5 days.
• Jolt/jerk can be subtle or violet. Always two jolt/jerks within a tenth of a second of each other.
• Has occurred since new.
• Can be driver only or fully loaded. No difference.

Has any experienced anything like this? - is there are wider audience worth posting this to?

Was handbrake applied while car was parked If so check for sticking pistons or cable trouble with rear brakes

Hmm........ my hunch (wild guess really) is that your "kangaroo-hopping" observation might be related to one of Assist functions in the ABS module - maybe?

Candidate functions that come immediately to mind include:

• Brake disk drying
• Auto-hold
• Hill Start Assist
• Starting vibration reduction

If you own a diagnostic device like OBDeleven, perhaps some experimentation might help?

PS: Easy to dismiss Auto-hold as the culprit - simply turn-OFF the function via the center console switch. Does the problem persist?

Can occur with/without.

Also I need to slightly amend my notes as it doesn't occur off zero... there's a good metre or two of movement (speedometer reading 3 kph for the two occurences yesterday) before the jolt.

Isn't brake disc drying... occured last night where there was zero rain.

Last night the car was driven to retrieve the teenager from work. So two opporunities to occur. One when leaving home, the other leaving the street parking when the spawn entered the car... but it didn't.

We then went to dinner. The car sat for 30 min as we had a quick meal. Upon returning to the car (zero rain) the water temp = 90. Oil temp = 80. At 3kph (just releasing the brake and letting the DSG egress from the curb side parking) it occured. Flat road. Could have left car in nutural and brake off and it wouldn't move.

I can buy a diag device but would be lost as to what to look for?

I wonder if it's like traction control \ ABS activating, a bad tone ring or ABS dropping the wheel speed for a second.

Without watching live data with a scan tool it's going to be hard to diagnose.

"when the spawn entered the car" - haha. Not heard of this term of affection for a progeny (being an organism resulting from sexual or asexual reproduction).

hmm...... AFAIK, the brake disk wiping function on a mk7 is linked to the windscreen wipers - the system applies a series of weak brake pulses if the front wipers are ON consistently (rather than just intermittently) and the car is traveling over a threshold speed (70k/hr?)

I agree - it's probably OK to dismiss brake disc drying as a candidate cause for this problem because "there was no rain" - but not necessarily (the system could be activating incorrectly without the wiper/speed prerequisite)

She's generally referred to as the 'Devil's Spawn' given her predilection for 0 to valve bounce tantrums in a nano second

I've ordered an ODBEleven.... if for no other reason than to turn on the feature where you can lock the car from the remote whilst the engine is running. (So I can leave the preferred family member, the dog, in AC comfort whilst at the petrol station filling/paying)

So will need guidence on what to monitor with the ODBEleven
