    2013 Golf TSI 1.4L Cracked Piston CTHD?

    Hi all,

    I'm getting a mechanic to look at my car soon but because of the virus it will take a bit longer (previous bookings). In the time being could anyone help/guess in what the problem is with my car. I'm not exactly that smart when it comes to cars.

    Cracked pistons on the 118TSI is very common and the truth is that is probably what you have there. Im surprised it lasted 113,000km too be honest, many go well before that time.

    Is the car down on power? If its got a damaged piston then its likely to be down on power as compression is leaking.

    It's majorly down on power.

    I've been quoted ~4k for 40k engine including swap

    Or should I look for an engine rebuild (not sure on the price)

    I would put the 2nd hand engine in it and get rid of it personally.

    Rebuilding the engine with new pistons etc is very expensive, doubt you will get out of that for under $8k. The parts alone will be a few grand, then machining the head, honing bores etc, and many hours of labour to assemble the engine. Its just not worth it for a car like this (different if it was a Porsche or something).

    Unfortunately even thought the CTH engines were supposed to be better than the CAV ones, I expect this is a done piston. You will feel that the acceleration lags a bit and a bit lumpy (misfiring).
    If you can put a scan tool on it and see if you are getting any misfire codes, that would help to determine the issue even further - but I suppose thats what you mechanic will do.

    It is a hard all about what to do - if you have had your car from new and always get it serviced at the same VW dealer, and can swear black and blue that you have only used premium unleaded in it - then it may be worth going down the track of talking to your dealer about getting a VW fix.

    Other than that, if you can afford it the $4K changeover isn't a bad deal really - and then flog it off afterwards.

    Lucas, isn't the 2013 a current single turbo 1.4, rather then the 1.4 twincharger grenade?

    Good point. Everybody should always keep their fuel receipts, since the faults related to the fuel are reasonably common. It’s extra useful habit if you own diesel.

    The engine shown in the video in the 1st post is a 118TSI twincharge engine. The year 2013 was the transition from Mk6 to Mk7 so this will be a late Mk6 car but incorrectly put into the Mk7 area of the forum.

    CTHD is still the Twincharger.
