Most of us probably drive our cars for many thousands of kilometres every year, but during that time how many of us have actually checked our transmission fluid? A common mistake is ignoring the importance of transmission fluid and how it can improve vehicle performance and life. Do you know that along with motor oils and coolants, our transmission fluid should also be regularly checked and maintained?

Fluids used for manual and automatic transmissions are different to those used for protecting your engine and the correct transmission fluid must be chosen in accordance with the recommendation of your vehicle’s manufacturer.

Motul’s complete range of synthetic, Technosynthese® and mineral transmission fluid is available to suit a variety of vehicles as well as various types of gearboxes and meet the needs of today’s modern vehicles. From DEXRON to MERCON standards for Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT), Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCT) and even LSDs, Motul preserves and protects your transmission for the ultimate power and efficiency.

As like other essential automotive fluids, transmission fluid degrades with time. Heavy use, such as towing or frequent stop-and-go driving will raise the operating temperature of the transmission and shorten fluid life. Transmission fluid helps facilitate gear shifts, as well as cools and lubricates the transmission components.

If you do a lot of heavy driving, you should check your transmission fluid more often. Transmission fluid tends to turn darker as it deteriorates, and it may acquire a burnt odour indicating that it’s time for a change.

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is optimised for the unique requirements of automatic transmissions, but in some cases it is also used in manual gearboxes. The benefits of ATF over conventional gear oil are its low pour point (the point at which it loses its fluidity) and low viscosity which is suited for tighter internal gearbox clearances, fuel efficiency purposes or to enable the transmission to have better shifting performance in cold conditions.

Also, certain components in manual transmissions, including specific bearing types or carbon fibre synchromesh aren’t compatible with traditional gear oils and so ATF is used instead.

Motul transmission fluids work to:

• Improve fuel economy by reducing epicyclical gear friction;
• Protect gears with tight clearances and under heavy loads;
• Increase automatic transmissions response, smooth shifting and minimise shift time lag;
• Better cold temperature performance for your gearbox;
• Extend gearbox life via an anti-wear, anti-corrosion and anti-foam formulation.

Motul Multi ATF is a popular multipurpose automatic transmission fluid engineered for modern automatic transmissions, featuring outstanding performance with regards to DEXRON 3 and MERCON standards.

Motul ATF 1A is a JASO 1A standard transmission fluid specially formulated for Japanese automatic transmissions, as well as torque converters and High Viscosity Index (HVI) hydraulic systems.
