    What petrol are you using?

As RON98 is the remcomended petrol for GTI and R32 (for other VWs as well?), I am interested to know what brand of petrol you are using. Do you notice any difference between different brands? Also RON98 is not as widely avaiable as RON95, do you notice any difference on milage or performance using RON95?

I use BP Ultimate. In Tassie we dont have a choice as they are the only ones to have 98 octane. And thats only since last August !!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Andrew

What did you use prior to Ultimate in Tas? I assume 95RON? If so, how did the GTI run on that?

    Question

I have to run 98 octane in the Little Beastie. I prefer Vortex 98 or Shell V power. I have wanted to ask this question for a while but keep on forgetting. What would Shell V power Racing 100 octane do to the Little Beastie as it has 10% ethanol in it as well? Will I gain anything or just through money down the fuel pipe?

I would like to get v-power or ultimate whenever I can. But I don't feel like driving 15 minutes each way to fill up everytime so I end up using Vortex95 most of the time. I hope I am not doing any damage to the car. I didn't feel the difference between 95 and 98 but I guess I am not driving the car hard enough yet. Does anyone see or feel the difference between 95 and 98 in terms of fuel economy or performance?

Sustained acceleration feels stronger when I'm on 98. Don't notice any difference when I'm "sunday driving" though.

Hi Splashalot, I used 95 octane with octane boost. It worked ok but Ultimate gives it more oomph!
With the APR program I flashed a 95 octane program into it. Always used the 98 program though.
    Cheers, Andrew

I'll only run BP 98 or Vortex 98 in mine, unless I get stuck out in the boonies. I generally avoid Shell fuel.

A number of guys I race with have tuned their cars on Shell fuels, and have blown motors to show for it.
The reliability of the shell fuels is the worst of the premium fuels.
The other issue with the Shell V power racing 100 is that the ethanol will evaportae more quickly than the base fuel, so if you get your fuel from a servo with low turnover it might not be quite what you paid for.

The reliability of the fuel is less of an issue for stock motors, as the knock sensor will take care of it (but also see below), but if your car is chipped then Shell is probably not be the best option.

As for 95 octane, VW don't recommend it, as the engine has to ping before the knock sensor can pick it up. So you get some impact on engine life - any pinging is undesirable.

If you are going for a fang, stick with the 98 octane, but if you are out for a sunday drive, then you're not likely to get to the point of detonation, so the 95 octane is probably fine.

Red may be the devils colour, but this car is pure heaven
