Maybe light rust on the disks from parking after rain/washing ? My Octy sometimes gives a good clunk as the pads free up from the disks, and I also get a light "swooshing" noise and a sort of gritty feeling from the first few brake applications as the rust wears off.

Other possibilities are a worn DMF (manual gearboxes only) or engine/gearbox mounts worn/RS.

If you have DSG and you're switching from D or P to R you might come across a slight clunking noise especially when the car is on a hill

I'm pretty sure its the physical movement of the whole engine and transmission when you go from D to R. When you change from D to R, you will notice if you take ur foot off and dont accelerate, the car will move in reverse on its own without making the clunking noise. Once it starts moving, then you can accelerate without a problem.

To fix the issue (or at least reduce it), there are many engine mounts and engine mount inserts you can buy, which reduce the engine movement.

Check the rear pads, they chew them out real quick.
I've done 2 sets of rear pads, same year.

Also the pads do get a bit of end play, as you go one way and stop ang the other they can :click: in the seats of the calipers, pretty normal, fronts may do it too.

so do I need to fix it ?an how? Or this is just normal mechanical movements that won't harm the car?
