    Replacement Windscreen cost?

    Hi Guys

Just wondering if anyone knows how much a replacement windscreen is for an 06 comfortline golf (with auto sensing wipers?)

Have got a reasonably sized stone chip in there and am trying to figure out if its worth replacing the whole windscreen with a genuine VW job, or if i should just try and get it repaired...

    Cheers

    Hi KB

I paid $347 at o'briens about 4 weeks ago (had to haggle a bit) and they had the car for the day, honestly think auto wipers work better than before with the after market sensor - I was a bit worried about it...

Genuine was quoted at 640 to 800 depending on who you asked.

I was always under the impression that the sensors for the wipers were in the rear view mirror and seperate to the front windscreen ?

Yes, that's in the same part in the screen.

There are two sensors - one at the mounting point where the rear view mirror attaches to the screen (wipers) and another in the back of the mirror assembly (day/night mirror function)

The rain sensor is inside the car, in the mirror mount, but it's glued to the windscreen and basically impossible to remove without destroying it.

It's glued as it must be flush to the glass as the rain detection works on measuring the diffraction of IR light that is bounced off the windscreen.

Rain on glass = thicker surface (glass + rain); which affects the diffraction; which affects the amount of light that is returned to the sensor.

That is why it's important to keep the area of glass above the mirror mount squeaky clean to ensure correct operation of the rain sensor. It is also why the passenger wiper is so long - to wipe the sensor area.
