Wow, did you have the car from new? If not what year model is yours? DSG or Manual?
Great to hear they sorted it out for you so quickly, had VW ever come across a similar problem before?
Sorry for the 20 questions!!
Thought I'd share this tale of joy with all... Finally took the plunge a couple of months back and sold the Bora 4Mo to get the dream R32 (that the 4Mo was a surrogate for in the first place). It wasn't long til I had to try launch control, which was where things got interesting. Alongside a WRX at the traffic lights, no-one else in sight, quiet road, I couldn't help but do so.
Imagine my surprise when he's taken off like I'm in mum's Kia, save for the fact that my front tyres are frying, billowing out smoke. Seemed that the R wasn't quite functioning as I'd hoped... Anyway, long story short, took it off to VW nearby to have them look at it (it was due for a service anyway). They couldn't replicate the problem, as always seems to happen. I didn't try launch control again, but even in the dry I was certainly noticing that ESP light come on a lot more than it used to in the Bora, so I knew it wasn't right. In simple terms, there was no drive at all going to the rears.
After then taking one of the mechanics for a drive (I WAS able to replicate the problem...) VW duly booked it in to figure out what was wrong.
That was Tuesday just gone. VW Germany had them take the whole gearbox and transfer case out and then look inside and I was thinking crap its going to be weeks before I see the car again - but much to my surprise (and happiness) - they called on Wednesday to tell me the entire transmission etc was being replaced with a brand newie!! Having just picked the car up I can confirm that it is a (as you'd expect) completely different beast.
Have to hand it to VW service - not only did they straight replace that, they also replaced the bluetooth with a newer unit (i had an old one that was echoey) and the iPod connection too. Am one happy chappy.
Out of this whole exercise though I have to say, it is a testament to how well these cars are put together and designed that 185kw can be put through the fronts only and it not just fry the tyres all the time. Well done, Mr VW.
Nada as yet... But working on it...

+1 for taking it to the dealers... I found that the 4mo failed on my Bora 4mo during the last Dyno day, when it ran in FWD!! After some initial discussions about worst case coupling failure (read mucho denaro), I took it to VW dealer for a paid diagnosis. $135 and 1 hr later the guys diag'ed with just a failed controller. Luckily I was sorted out with a spare through fellow VWWC dubbers, Manaz and Seb.
I agree that dealers may not always be angels, but lets not only bash them when they are bad, lets also praise them when they help us out!
