    problems with aircon 2.0TDI

on a recent trip to the Gold Coast, aircon intermittently stops blowing cold air, unit under dash still making noise, but much less air coming through the vents, and only cool, not cold.
Tried all sorts of buttons, sequences to no avail. Usually comes back on after 10 minutes or so.
Was glad we weren't driving in summer!
when I had the car in for 75k service at the GC, VagCom showed no faults, ....could I bring it back when it was doing it...?!

any ideas out there what it might be?

have booked it in for next week (airbag faulty light started coming on) but hope they don't say "we can't find anything wrong, please bring it back when it's doing it (or not).

    regards

    Hi,

Is it climate control a/c ?? I'm not 100% sure of how it works in a car but on my home a/c unit it cuts off when it reaches a set temperature due to the thermostat cutting in, it is designed that way to save on electricity. I had a similar problem to the one you're describing but on an EF Fairmont I had which I was told by Ford would more than likely be a vacuum leak somewhere. Perhaps that could be why you have an airbag light flashing (maybe a leaking vacuum hose somewhere?? ) I would think they should be able to pick that up with the right testing.

Do you have climate control where you select a temperature and let the box do it's job?

If so it will cycle on and off.

If you select 22 degrees and hit the snowflake button, it will work flat out and the fan will be on high speed. The fan will slow down as the temp in the car drops until it gets to 22 degrees. When it senses an increase above 22, the fan will rev up until the temp drops again.

There is usually a good explanation of how it works in the owners handbook.

The compressors on the new cars are actually continuously variable, so rather than cycle on and off they just ramp up or down - much like inverter airconditioners.

A lot of people have had faulty aircon compressors on Mk V golfs, but usually (I think) it is a case of it stopping working all together.

Do a search on this forum and see if you can find a thread about aircon issues and the top dash vent. A few got caught out by having the vent open and just blowing on the window, when this vent was shut the aircon worked fine.
I think the comfortline and Jetta have the top vent but not sure about the trendline.
