I live about 100klms from my nearest VW service, spare parts dealer so when I wanted to change the engine oil, I went to every oil outlet in my town to buy Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow. None was stocked so I bought Castrol Edge at $53 for 5 liters. I was not convinced that this was a substitute so I rang Castrol Hot line and was told that Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow was made in Germany to VW specs and shipped to their dealers wordwide, and it has no substitute. So drove to the dealer for their oil at $72.5 for 5 liters. I wonder if the motor had damage under warranty and you were not using the VW oil what would be the outcome.

Yep, your warranty would be void, that's exactly why they have a VW spec for the oil, as do all motor manufacturers. It's amusing how you can read different threads about what favourite oils people are using in their VW engines and a lot of them aren't up to the VW spec even though they are synthetic etc.

Using non-complying or non-genuine parts during warranty period will give them cause to void warranty for affected parts.

Even if you use the factory parts you are still buggered unless the work is performed by "suitably qualified" personnel. I'm assuming this means you need to hold an MVRIC licence.

I believe the following oils are available in many auto parts places and have the latest VW licences on the bottle:

• Mobil1 0w40
• Shell Helix Ultra VX 5w30
• Penrite Enviro 5w30

Castrol Edge is a VW/Audi 502 approved oil, so you have not voided your warranty. Granted, it's probably not the best oil you can get for your engine, it is one of the cheaper one

There are 4 different grades/viscosities of Castrol Edge. Only the 0w40 is VW 502/505 Approved. The 5w30 meets the specification but doesn't appear to have been through VWs labs.

Isn't the latest spec 504 for petrol & 507 for diesel? OP hasn't actually said what he has.

If it helps, since you're in Cooma, there's a Castrol Distributor in QBN. For my in-between service oil changes at home I picked up a 20 litre drum of this from them for $170.

works out at $8.50 per litre and is full synthetic with the VW 502, 505 approvals. (not sure what approval your particular engine needs)

Edit: When I called the dealer and spoke to the Technician after my service this is the oil he said was used in my car, I noticed later this is what was written next to the oil code on my invoice. (Cast Softec TXT)

There is a 504.00 for petrol and a 507.00 for diesel.

But every oil that has been developed has been able to meet both standards hence why VW refer to the standard as 504.00/507.00.

VW 500.00 - VW spec for multigrade engine oils for petrol engines with SAE 5W-X/10W-X viscosity.

VW 500.00 + 505.00 - Oil meets both VW 500.00 and 505.00 spec.

VW 501.01 - VW spec for petrol engines.

VW 501.14 - Brake fluid with low viscosity, VW 2006>.

VW 502.00 - VW spec, oil for petrol engines. Successor of VW 501.01 & 500.00 spec.

VW 503.00 - Long-life petrol engine oil for VW cars with WIV. Meets ACEA A1, SAE 0W-30 or 5W-30.

VW 503.01 - Special engine oil for some VW petrol engines. SAE 5W-30.

VW 504.00 - Long-life petrol engines with WIV.

VW 505.00 - Passanger car diesel engine oil, minimum performance level CCMC PD-2. Lists viscosities:- SAE 5W-50, 10W-50/60, 15W-40/50, 20W-40/50 requiring 13% max evaporation loss and SAE 5W-30/40, 10W-30/40 requiring 15% max evaporation loss.

VW 505.01 - Special engine oil for VW turbodiesel with pump-injector-unit and for the V8 commonrail turbodiesel engines. Meets ACEA B4 SAE 5W-40 spec.

VW 506.00 - Special long-life engine oil for turbodiesel engines with WIV, viscosity is SAE 0W-30.

VW 506.01 - Special long-life oil for turbodiesel engines with pump-injector-unit with WIV.

VW 507.00 - Long-life diesel engine oil with WIV.

WIV is extended drain periods.

It's from the UK website, but I am assuming the same applies in Aus - I'd doubt we'd get an oil with the exact same name here that is actually different than the rest of the world
