    Oh what! $30..

Nevermind, I have more than 3L of oil left for next time.
How long will it last after openning (12 months?).

So they charged you $30 for about 500 mL of oil...

I thought oil top ups at VW dealers were supposed to be free of charge?

That's a very tricky question and every oil company will give you a different answer. The 12 months is about right by my measures as long as the container is air tight once opened. Don't be surprised when someone will say the synthetic oil has an infinite life if stored correctly.

I'm not sure about that and certainly wouldn't use it in MK5.
Where did you read that it's approved?

Shell Helix HX7 10W-40 is indeed approved to 502/505, but I'd say that Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 (502/505) and especially Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 (504/507) are much better suited to FSI engines.

I could only find that it meets and that's not the same in my books. I wouldn't use it even if it was approved.

The Forester we bought new in 1999 had in the specs that you could use SG specs oil, but at the same time they were calling for the latest energy conserving 5W30 oil.

Rumours of GTX being between 50-85% recycled oil have been floating around for years.

Do you have a link to any press release or product information? Is it 504.00/507.00 compliant?

We used to use recycled oil when I was at Goodyear in the early 80s. We used to sell our old oil to the recyclers for 5c a litre (and it was full of brake fluid, diff oil & battery acid) & buy recycled back for 20c/L. It was rubbish oil but how else can you offer a lube with filter for $10? We had a recomended change interval of 3months/5000km.
