G'day,
I've had my Jetta for about 1 week now and it's done just over 500kms. I was trying out the 'sports' setting on the DSG and was a bit too shall we say... enthusiastic and the engine revved all the way up to 6000rpms for a brief moment... uh oh I thought there goes the gentle run in I was hoping for.
I'd like to get some idea if that was a good/bad idea and whether it will result in any harm to the engine/transmission/ car in general...
Thanks!

If you've done it once, it should be ok, but the seals etc. apparently need to be bedded in during that 5000k initial period. Having said that, the engines are pretty well bench tested, so no lasting damage should occur. Check your oil, though, as they use a bit in the early days.

As long as it was warm there is nothing to be worried about - New school of thought of running in engines is to give them a thrashing to make sure the entire ring is bedded in. Taking it too easy is much worse.![]()
im sorry to tell you this, and ive said it before here many times.
my wifes cousins work for tnt and other car carrying companys.they have told me how they thrash the cars(porsche, beemers, merc, vdubs ,just about every car make!),burnouts and rev all the way to the limiter as they load the car onto the truck.when they deliver the cars to the importer/head office, the car is then duly thrashed by the next guy whos job it is to line all the cars up.
the cars are not loaded onto the ship via a cotton wool crate, from the factory ,think of how many people have actually sat and driven your car!!
car completed from factory-
driven to car park waiting for loading onto truck/train to be taken to ship.
removed from truck/train to be loaded onto ship.
driven into ship.
driven off ship.
driven onto truck here.
driven off truck and parked at importers.
driven onto truck to be taken to allocated dealer.
driven off truck at final dealer.
driven into pre delivery check ,then parked into dealer yard.
do you really believe not one of the at least 8 guys who have driven your car before you got it,never revved it hard???????????
not trying to stir you up or be smart, but this is the cold hard facts of a car being delivered into a country so far away from its original birth place!!!
there was a thread somewhere on here that had a link onto a site that explained about run in times, how its best to drive it as you normally would so the rings on the pistons bed in correctly.the harder its driven earlier, the longer your engine will last in the long term and the harder it will rev in the long run.
I believe this to be true as I owned a vr6 from new, which I thrashed the hell out of it from day 1...never had a problem with it and the mechs at vw always said it revved harder and went faster than any other vr6 they had driven!!!
ps- make sure you change the oils regularly!! every 5000 !!!
Unfortunately, I think you are absolutely right, and those 20 or 'delivery' km's that the car has on the clock when you pick it up, are probably the hardest km's the car will ever do!
It's very frustrating to know that some disrespectful punk can get away with treating someone else's brand new car in such a way. I mean, bouncing off the rev limiter in 1st gear on a cold start, with an engine that is as tight as a fishes proverbial cannot be a good thing.
good one gavin!!! thats the link!!!
might try and save it somewhere here as its a common question!
ha...think you got a virgin and the whole footy team has had a go!!![]()
