My personal experience with the Jetta

I got to say I love the driveline.... Until it decides to fail
Really nice finish, except I think the boys in Mexico built mine on a Friday.
(That quote was from a friend who summed up my luck with the car, thus far)

Here's the story so far only because of all the lovely experiences everyone else is having with theirs, well most anyway.

    This is not a sob story, just a record of events so far;

-steering box needed to be replaced before 5000k's
-transport chocks were still on the front springs, even after the steering box was replaced.
-drivers seat railing needed to be replaced before 10000k's
-drivers side chrome door strip needed to be replaced because it was tarnished and they could not be polished out.
-engine coolant gum found under the left side of the engine bay. to be looked at.
-rear view mirror not dimming anymore
-seatbelt warningtone and dash light not active anymore
    -both heated seats not heating
-boot not opening all the way up like it used to, just pops and you have to lift the rest of the way.
-passenger window button finish is peeling off.
-key unit after last service now does not lock into position, dont need to press button to close it.

So yeah, still 18months warranty left and will use if required, most likely wouldnt you say....

    Great car otherwise

Oh yeah, I forgot to add the drivers side seats right hand bolster, the finish is cracking and looks like its starting to peel.
Apparently if you wear denim this will happen.
I didnt read that in the manual though

Oh yeah the car has done 25000 k's in 18 month's
So, what do you guys think, should I ask them for another one yet?
Seriously though it has an awesome driveline and very good suspension with the 18's.
Drove its tits off through the Spur and no the "Black."
    It was a great drive.

I actually asked VW that question today. I said, it is rare, but what happens if I do get a lemon. Their reply is warrenty, and you wont get 100% of the cars 100% right 100% of the time...

It would sour the experience thats for sure!

Ive said it before I think my Jetta was made on a Wednesday,as to date after 8 months
    not one issue.
Good to see people posting their problems even the smallest of problems so we can all
keep an eye out for the same issues with our own vehicles.

Unfortunately its the luck of the draw, what i would say though is that you need to turf it when the warranty is up as these things get really expensive and annoying when you have to pay for it yourself ie a DSG gearbox which is 10k + i hear. Make sure the dealer addresses all your issues.

Ouch nismo23... sorry to hear about the probs with your Jetta.

The cracking finish on the driver's seat right hand bolster I pressume is the leather creasing & peeling off? I'm having the same prob because it's kinda the "landing" point for my bum and excessively rubbed off with my pants when I'm sitting down or getting out of the car due to the shape and height of the seat. Not sure if anyone else who has had the car for a while is having similar prob?

Also I noticed the black paint on my power window and aircond buttons have pelled off quite a bit...so I'm worried over time if those buttons are left as plain white plastics with no label/logo

My seat is, to be honest f**ked at that point and after onky 7200km. i noticed it starting to wear excessively after less than 1000. i have cloth seats btw and its something ill be taking up at the 1st service as i dont reckon it should be happening so soon.

Maybe trade in on a South African built one

Seriously it sucks to hear these stories the Government should implement the Lemon Law IMO.

I think you should sell you vehicle before the warranty ends unless of course the Jetta is not faulty anymore.

    Good Luck.

theres also the extended warranty. you should start mentioning that they should give you a good price for it since you've wasted so much of your time getting the car fixed. rrp for it is 1500 for 2 years. id be wanting 50% off that if i were you.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. The washer line for the windscreen snapped.
It was replaced with a differently designed one that is still good.

Yes it is a sad fact but "The luck of the draw" seems to be and issue as some cars depend on it.
I feel bad for you steve_tdi as I thought the cloth would have been a little more durable.

Im thinking if I dont get an extended warranty, it could get ridiculously expensive, even for small things.
Or sell the bloody thing before 3 years. Fair enough though it has only been small things I guess, if you can call a new steering rack a small thing.
Ok apart from that...its been small things...

As for the finish on the buttons, its a bit of a joke, they will be snow white and the end of it....

Good thing palces like tmtuning exist.
Pretty good prices on oem stuff. Once the warranty runs out.
Anyhoo chat later fella's, got to go now

Its a bit crazy isnt it?
