Thread: Mk5 TDI intake

    Mk5 TDI intake

I tried using the search tool but couldn't really find anything too helpful. I am looking for a replacement filter for my TDI that will give an ok power increase. Do K&N etc make a TDI-specific one? Looking to spend around $100, not $900 on some carbon ram-air intake system....just the filter.

You're wasting your money, VW would fit a better one if would make a noticeable difference, all you may do it get a little more noise at the risk of letting more rubbish through the filter.

Your best bang for buck upgrade is to flash the car, everything after that offers diminishing returns for your dollar.

To answer your question, yes K&N and most of the aftermarket filters make a MKV Golf/ Jetta one, and if you do want one, they show up on e-bay for about $70, don't go paying the standard $120 or so!

I noticed no difference though, and even my full Modshack Pod difference was minimal, but yeah, I'd still get one.

The standard filter breathes very well on the TDI.

Avoid oiled filters, consensus (and indepth analysis) from tdiclub.com indicates that they are MAF-killers.

Other lessons from the fanatics on tdiclub:
    - avoid changing the air filter more than required (e.g. more than specified unless extreme conditions) as this can allow dirt into the engine.
    - same goes for checking the filter condition. every time you open the air box you let crap in.

If you do go for a pod, buy a CALIBRE brand pod from Supercheap auto. It is a urethane filter (no oil) that outflowed everything else and added 2.5kw on a test car in Zoom where nobody else got above a 2kw gain. This was tested by putting all the various pods on the end of the same tube placed outside the engine bay in cool air. Same car, same day, same dyno. In that test the brand was called DRIFT. But now they are Calibre.

It is also important to note that the 2.5KW gain was ABOVE having no air filter at all and just letting the 3 inch pipe breathe unfiltered.

Great result and they only cost about $35

Has a bellmouth internal inlet and the vanes are spun to create more of a vortex.

I do it just so that over the next couple of services I don't pay $15-$30 for some crap paper filter which they probably don't even install and just charge me for.
