    Mk V Speaker Size

Hi all, I posted this question in the audio section yesterday but no replies as yet, hopefully someone here can help.

This may seem like a fairly dumb question but I've tried searching (honest!) and haven't found the answer. What direct bolt in front speaker sizes are available for Mk V golfs? If someone could provide a size and any recommendations I can go fwd from there. Obviously I could remove the trims to find out but I want to avoid that if possible. I've been out of the car audio game for quite a while and had MB Quartz splits in my last aftermarket installation (about 7 years ago - and they were awesome), are they still one of the front runners?

These won't be running off an external amp at this stage but a 4 x 45w deck. I may look at an external amp if I can find a quality brand that's cost effective.

    Any help is appreciated

Yup, it's the GT Sport w/ 8 speaker setup and RCD300 head unit. Not very impressed so far and will be getting the AVC-9000 Head Unit w/ Sat Nav, Ipod, Bluetooth etc and thought it best to upgrade speakers at the same time. Anyone know speaker sizes though? I've done a bit more searching and think that they're 6.5" but want to get it confirmed.

    Will do, there's a thread at GolfMkV.com

which is the same unit as I'm getting. Looks good, not perfect but a lot better than standard.

I think the 8 speaker setup has 2-way components in each door (or somewhere in the rear for the 3-door). Whereas, the 10 speaker setup has 3-ways in the front and 2-ways in the rear.

I think the woofers are 6"x7" or something kinda strange like that. So you'd need to add some sort of spacer to fit a 6.5" in that space. Should be able to make something up out of MDF.

As far as I know, there are no direct drop in replacements on the market.

You'll need to be careful with speaker depth otherwise you could run in to some trouble with your windows or re-fitting the trim over the top.

You also need to be careful. According to the vortex, the speakers in the doors need to be fully sealed as the side-impact sensor for the airbags actually works on air pressure i.e. when the door deforms in an impact it's volume changes which changes the air pressure.

If the speaker is not sealed front to back (i.e. whatever way you mount it - I understand that the OEMs are riveted in) then you risk your side airbags not working.

I don't have any links at the moment but the DIY threads in vortex should have more information.
