You're way out of your depth with this. If your local guy has issues then your first port of call is your dealer who has all of the knowledge and equipment you need.
Going cheap always costs more in the end.

Was told by the VW dealership whilst doing its 45K service that the pads needed replacing. Fronts were down to they say 5mm (actually 8 ) and rears down to 1mm (3).
Not wanting to pay $250 for pads & $110/hr to replace pads i have elected to do my own.
Got pads (Bendix CT) from my local guys (who have done all my Renaults & Holden with no problems) and he has given me pads to suit.
HOWEVER.....
Fronts are labelled DB 1192 and look nothing like the pads on the car.
Rears are DB 1325 and possibly look like the ones on the car, if i could get the caliper off.
QUESTIONS:
1) What size spline do i need to get the rear caliper off?
2) Does the rear caliper need a special tool to push the piston back in?
3) What is the correct pad number for the front pads? DB ????
4) Is it common for the rear pads to wear faster than the fronts (on Golfs?)
5) Are the Mk IV rear discs the same as the Mk V ?
Regards
David

Have a look on golfmkv.com or vwvortex, I have seen a DIY on replacing the pads & rotors on a GTI - that should give a few clues.
1) Not sure, but I have heard it is hard to come by.
2) Yes, the pistons screw in and out on the rear.
3) Pass
4) Yes, and the rotors wear quickly too - a friend of mine had to get them changed at 60000km in his 1.9l diesel golf.
5) No Idea.
So in summary, the fronts are a no worries, the rears aren't hard either - but you do need a couple of special tools.

Don't want to sound like a smart arse, but, have been doing brakes etc on lots of french and australian cars for ages.
Don't know about you but with 5 cars to maintain you have to budget the books somewhere. As i said paying $110 per hour to do stuff you could do in 20 mins doesn't make sense to me unless you don't want to get your mitts dirty.
This forum provides plenty of help to guys with MK I & II's etc who want to do their own work.
Are they asking for trouble???????????
These are legitimate questions that need to be asked if you can't get the repair book.
Do you have one?
It looks as though the Mk V forum so far is frequented by people who are more interested in polishing their cars rather than fixing them.
There have been brake questions asked before:

Every make is different, and if you don't find out the right way to do it, why buy the car after all - just buy a Holden Belmont.
