Got my tyres AND I LOVE THEM MADLY

    Hey guys

After seeing lots of people on here with Michelins and Falkens, and having extracted 75,000km out of the original set of Conti Sport 2's, I went tyre shopping.

Prices ranged from under $200 to over $360 per corner, which wasn't cheap, really.

Everything from Kendas (seriously, WTF), through Bridgestones, Michelins, Falkens, and god knows what else... So I got armed with all the best prices I could get, then spoke to a bloke I know through historic racing who always looks after me.

Anyway it turns out he's near a VW & Audi dealer and he had a few of the options in stock, but he offered me an option nobody else did - Pirelli P-Zero Rossos.

The price was lower than other people quoted me for the Falken's, and OH. MY. GOD.

The ride feels firmer, it feels like it has stiffer springs in it compared to the Contis. I was never happy with the turn in with the Conti's, my wife's Focus is MUCH better, but with the Pirellis if you turn in aggressively like you would for the Contis you will end up driving up the gutter. It goes EXACTLY where you steer it, and makes the car feel like its half the width. The speed you can carry through corners is amazing, and the suspension of the car is clearly the limiting factor now, the tyres hang on tenaciously.

Now for some springs and swaybars...

Nice buy mate. I've got the Neros on mine which are the more aggressive sport tyre and they're fantastic. After the pretty ordinary Nankang NS-2s which I bought the R with the step up to a quality tyre is excellent.

my mums Pug 307 Sport-180 came with P-Zero Rossos and they were pretty decent tyres. very grippy and excellent performance in the wet.

for my GTI i replaced my balding Conti Sport Contact 2s with the cheaper Yokohama Advan Sport V103s. theyre an incredibly good tyre and so well price and IMO better than the CSC2s in everyway. one of the most incredible things about them is how quiet they are.. you barely get any tyre squeal from them if your wheels spin away or when you're cornering hard at the limit.

unfortunately my new CW GTI is fitted with CS2s already but if they last as long as they did on my GTI i'll be replacing them in about 22,000kms

By the tone of the rest of your post, you sound like you push your tires pretty hard.

On that basis, as I am not hard on tyres, I look forward to about 150,000 Km from my Contis.

Tyres with 75,000 km on them would be about as grippy as a .....heck I can't think of anything bad enough. Tyres are a pretty cheap part of motoring, and I never let them go past 50,000 km, or 3 years on any vehicle. On the R32 I've budgeted for replacement at 20,000 km, though I must admit that they still look new at 13,000. No matter how good they look, they won't be allowed go past 30.

On a slightly different note, I recently replaced the BFGs on my Hilux after only 20,000 kms. They had tons of tread, but were just the most horrible things I've ever driven. I know it's only a truck, but they had nothing to recommend them, other than being good on dirt. Replaced the tyres on the Hilux and the RAV with Pirellis, and the improvement was dramatic. Still trucks, but now the steering and brakes are connected to something.

Nope, its all legit, and for those commenting on the state of my tyres after 75,000km they still had meat on them - and the tyre shop didn't even bother looking at either front or rear alignment as the tyres wore perfectly even in all respects.

I personally thought the Conti's were just very hard compound tyres. This is my second FWD car in a row I had 75,000km on the first set of tyres. Aggressively rotating tyres evens out wear, don't hit anything and run 40psi. Works for me

Oh and that mileage includes a Murcotts Level 1 & Level 2 advanced driving course too.

I dunno what to think when I hear of people murdering Contis in under 20k? Could there be German and South African Contis???

I'm not sure I really understand the reasoning, if the car is being driven the tyres won't perish. Regardless, my 75,000km came up in 2 years and 1 month.
