get a golf 5 or not?

    Hi,

I'm currently driving a honda civic sedan 2002 and looking to buy a new civic or new accord but then my friend came up with an idea of Golf 5
I've searched and searched, would love to have the GTI..but it is not going to happen due to limited $$...lol...

anyway..I was looking to spend up to 35k but then at the moment I'm really trying to stay under 25k..maybe a lil more so used cars would be my only option
I looked up carsales and found some golf 5 1.6L or 1.9L for under 28k

I've never had a VW before and just wondering about a few things:
    - how much are the services
    - I heard european cars do not need a service as often as a jap cars. is this correct? so how often does the car need a service? every 20k or something?
    - has there been any problem with the golf 5?

    now another question is..
any model that you guys would recommend?
trendline, comfortline, 1.6L, 1.9L, TDI or FSI?
I can drive man or auto no prob, but I would really love an auto

any recommended dealer I should go to in Melbourne that can offer me really good deal?

    thanks

Polo GTI is in your price bracket. Since you are a ricer at heart this sounds the bollocks at 8000 rpm

    Service, problems and parts

Welcome to our forum! It'll be difficult for many of us to compare parts prices as most of us have only VWs and the Golf 5 is fairly new so little has gone wrong (yet).
    I had my TDI first-serviced @ 7,500km a few weeks ago and it cost $138. I haven't priced the next service @ 15,000km.
The big saving with the diesel is in fuel costs. Now that diesel is around the same price (or cheaper than) petrol the saving is good. And the diesel is no slouch, believe me
Problems? I had a factory recall for a problem with the radio flattening the battery but that was fixed in half an hour.

I think you should take the Golfs for a test drive. I don't think that you will take any convincing after that

Hi. Go the Golf 5! Brilliant built car. The deisels are no slouch and the auto (DSG) box is fantastic.
Drive one and you will soon make a decision!
    Welcome to the forum too.

    Welcome

and all I can say is my Mum is in your boat

I've been looking at new and used Golfs online for her, I'm waiting for a Candy White 1.9 or 2.0 TDI Comfortline (Man).

I think the Comfortline is the best value Golf and pre 2007MY all had Active Head Restraints.

Anyway if you want new have a look at Polo GTI as Robin suggested, otherwise drive a 1.9/2.0 TDI & 2.0 FSI back 2 back and see what suits you the most

    Good Luck

I was looking at the polo GTI, the only thing that attracts me is the turbo-charged..I sat in the demo car (haven't got a chance to test drive it), but the interior is very plasticky and it is a very small car.

Any opinion on the polo GTI?

otherwise I could get my hands on used GOLF trendline 1.6L or 1.9L, if lucky maybe a comfortline comes up on carsales for 25k..lol

Have a chat to the guys in the Polo part of these forums and see what their thoughts are. Personally, if I couldn't afford a Golf GTI, I would DEFINITELY go a Polo GTI.

I fully recommend the 2 litre diesel MkV.

Great performance and even better fuel economy and range

I have the Comfort Line, and I don't really know what else I could want in terms of luxury and safety.

I expect that the resale of these cars will be a lot higher than your average Asian brand equivalent.
