    Engine cover grommets

Whoever designed the GTI engine cover grommets should be shot.

2 of my 4 grommets are shot.

Does anyone know what the part number is?

Can you get them anywhere other than the dealer?

No rush, so happy to order if from overseas if significantly cheaper.

I didn't think they were that expensive from VW.

Make sure you lube the new ones up with silicone spray before you refit the cover.

    Ok, will call up VW.

I just used some Vaseline which I believe doesn't damage the rubber.

    I use rubber grease.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

I agree they are crap - even on my brand new Golf R (back in 2011) which uses the same engine cover, 1x of the grommets ripped when i removed the engine cover (car was only 2 days old). I just bought a new one from VW - it wasnt expensive but was just annoying that it ripped when it was brand new and i was being careful.

The part number is written on the rubber grommet - should be 9 numbers and a letter.

Just called a VW dealer, $15 each and they only have 2 in stock.

I usually get my VW spare parts from HSY, but they don't stock them. They are 500m from my workplace and are usually competitively priced for OEM parts.

I can get 4 from China for under $15 delivered. I'll probably get the aftermarket ones.. really they are just rubber grommets.

If I was in the US, I could buy them (Febi-Bilstein) brand for USD$1.68 plus shipping.

Probably the correct grease, but I can't see a light layer of petroleum jelly hurting the rubber anymore than the heat from the engine.

Very annoying isn't it. I suppose 10 years and 165km isn't too bad compared to 2 days!.

It's a bit hard to be careful, the only thing you can do is try to yank it out firmly but not too firmly.. it's just a poor design.

Why not have lightly torqued bolts holding it down?

Rhetorical question? If they did that, how are VW dealers supposed to sell their (very profitable) $15 grommets?
    (I can't believe that price)!

    Cheers

You may find out that they always cost this much or even more.
