    DSG query

Recently slowed to negotiate a give way intersection and when accelerating the car felt like it stalled and took a few seconds before it could find a cog. The car was in S mode and wasn't at a complete stop. My suspicion is that it was between gears but any idea what it may be/has anyone encountered a similar issue with their DSG?

I think the DSG tries to predict which way you want to go next based on your speed and accelerator position. If it thinks your going up, and you suddenly want to go down, you might catch it out and it will have the wrong gear preselected. I've read about a few people having this issue, but supposedly after it "learns" your driving style, it's meant to be pretty accurate most of the time.

I want to know what it does when you're in tiptronic mode. Does it still pre-select gears?

Ive had my box totally stop working (engaging gears) for about 10 seconds then all of a sudden was fine, got it checked out and didnt even throw any fault codes and hasn't done it since.

    Was'nt a nice feeling though!

Computers have glitches always will do I suppose.

It happened to me in similar situation actually, slowing down for a light, turned green while i was still rolling..throttle...nothing....more throttle...nothing..hazards on....then all of a sudden kicked in....

Even in tiptronic mode it would have the 'next' gear pre-selected, it's how the gearbox works.

The DSG is still making a guess, even if it is a highly educated one and I don't see how it can really be caught out of gear but there are moments of hesitation.

When manual mode is not manual

I have had similar instances with delays but nowhere near as long as those described here.

I have another question though... When I have shifted to the manual mode I noticed tonight that when I gave the accelerator a boot full it changed down from 6th to 4th instantly.... Not what I was expecting.

I thought manual was manual. Is this the case or is the DSG protecting us from a dangerous situation where you are (for example) overtaking and suddenly need to get out of there real quick?

That's excatly what happened. The lack of control was a worry, as well as someone running up your behind. Is there any value in visiting the dealer or is it "just one of those things"/learning to live with how the DSG "thinks".

There's a notch in the travel of the loud pedal.

Push through the notch and no matter what mode you've got the box in, it will drop down a gear or two. Push to the notch without going through it, and it won't shift down.

It's akin to the kick down switch on a slush box auto.

I've found (on TDI) that the urgency of movements on the accelerator seems to have the most influence on what the gearbox does.

If you gently and smoothly push it to the 'notch' then it usually won't change down unless it's too far from boost (TDI remember).

If you move the pedal fast, even for just a fraction of the pedal travel it seems to change down abruptly and go.

Kinda hard to explain but I think you get the idea.

I have experienced the same only for a second.

Was driving "carefully" as only had approx 1000 k's on it.

Will try the "urgent" push of accelerator to see if I can overcome.

    Thanks for the advice.
