Thread: DIY: How to repair a VW MK5 door lock module

  1. #11

Hi this is a great write up!

I’ve been trying to repair my own door locks but no having much success.

    Got a Golf Mk5 2004 (1.6 FSI - BAG engine code).

Wiring harness looked good and checked the door jam area as they are known for them going there. Couldn’t find any broken wires.

Stripped the lock down and cleaned out motors and polished commutator with sandpaper as shown in the guide.

But the door lock doesn’t lock and unlock as it should.

Any ideas what I should do?

    Thanks

Are you hearing any noise from inside the door when trying to lock/unlock and have you scanned the car for any faults?

Yes I’ve got VCDS / VAG COM....will do a scan and report back to you.

It was making noises...from what I could tell.

Before I started fiddling the door remained permanently open and wouldn’t lock.

Now it appears to to be permanently locked and won’t open....

    Not sure what to do?

Try to open from the inside. The electronic motor is used to lock and unlock for the remote. Pulling the internal handle should unlock mechanically.
Just relace the lock, there are many aftermarket options huge price range too.
The cheaper ones do work, but I have found 1 of 3 I purchased does not do deadlock mode, It always opens from the inside which is a pain as due to the heat over here leaving the windows partially down can be a nice thing.

Managed to get door back open and have stripped it all down again.

Still a bit clueless as to why it isn’t locking / unlocking. It looks as if it gets stuck in the locked position for whatever reason.

I’ve attempted to inspect the circuit board for bad solder joints but can’t see anything obvious. I know these can be very subtle so I may have missed something.

Now starting to suspect dodgy wiring from the window control unit to door lock, or in the door jam area.

The implausible signal implies that the signal sent back to the door control module is not what the module is expecting - for example, its expecting the door to be open but the signal is saying its closed. That in conjunction with the 01038 Central locking thermal protection which appears to indicate that the door module is not getting a message to stop the motor and the driver is overheating due to a stalled motor.

checking the operation of the micro switches would be a good place to start.

from memory the drivers door has 3.
    1 door open/closed
    2 lock active
3 unlock signal (from using the key)

the other doors only have 2.

There are some you tube clips on replacing and testing the switches.
Interestingly it appears faulty switches seem to be more prevalent in the UK and in Aus its the motors..... Just my observation.
