2.0 FSI flatspot moving from standstill?

    Hi all,

I've just pruchased a 2006 manual FSI Sportline (United Grey) and think its fantastic. The gearbox is wonderfully light and direct and the engine extremely smooth with a good midrange, though not overly endowed with low down torque...I know...thats what the diesels and turbos are for!

The car to me feels like its got a small flat spot really low down in the rev range at around 1500, only noticeable when you are taking off from stand still. You literally start to accelerate, even slowly, and then just for a franction of a second the power seems to go missing and then comes on again.

Is this just a characteristic of the engine (or engine management) or is something not quite right. The car has a perfect service history and literally just had its 75K service done by VW. I'm thinking of taking it to a VW to have checked out but wanted to see if anyone had any opinions first.

    Thanks in anticipation

If you're handy at all, I'd suggest you disconnect the battery for an hour ( quick on and off, don't let it spark ! ) as I believe this will reset the ECU back to learning made, and you have the chance to have it learn your driving style again.

Are there any tunes out there for the non turbo FSI at all people?

Great car the Sportsline i had an MY06, you might need just a little more

    right foot strength.

    Brilliant engine

Powerchips is a company which will remap the ecu, but there's not much

improvement over stock being a non-turbo engine.

Chipping wont give you enough power to justify the cost

As you've just purchased it, do you know what fuel is in the tank?

The symptom you are describing could be 91 fuel in the tank instead of 98.

Double check also that the spark plugs were changed at 60,000k. If they weren't, they could also cause this problem.

The plugs were all changed at 60K and its just had its 75K done. All servicing done at a Melbourne VW Dealer. I just put a full tank of Vortex 98 in it but the behaviour was there even when I picked it up.

Other than this issue off standstill the engine seems brilliant.

The car still under warranty so I think I'll get an opinion from a VW Service Centre. I have one 5 minutes from where I work. I guess I should also drive another 2.0 FSI to see if it feels the same.

    Thanks.

I also experience this with my 2.0FSI. Someone at another forum said it might be a faulty low pressure fuel sensor, which has been troublesome in some GTIs.

VW Austral didn't seem to care about this when I took it up at my regular service, although an RCU reset improved it for about a week, before it went back to the old behaviour. They said the FSIs really seldom had problems with said fuel sensor, so unless there was an error code, they wouldn't investigate.

I think it's just a side effect of the ECU. You probably need to learn to live with it or get a TDI or GTI. But keep us posted if you manage to get it improved somehow. Talking to someone that knows the engine and has the time to test drive it would probably be an idea.

My wifes 2005 Sportline does exactly the same thing. Just as the clutch is out, power dips then picks up 1/2 a second later. Was very hard to get used to as my 07 GTI felt totally different. My wife doesn't really notice, and hasn't mentioned it but I notice it every time I drive it.

It's just something I've had to get used to. Not very excited about it to be honest so if you find out what it is (if it is an actual problem) then please let us know.

Chipping a non-turbo car (especially stock) will not give you an improvement that you will notice. 5% - 10% as an absolute maximum. Some of you may have seen the video I made about chipping. I filmed a section on non-turbos but when I found out that there are no real gains to be had I took it out of the video.

Link is here for those that want to see the process...
