Is there anything wrong with it currently? Or just it's getting up in km's?
Engine swaps aren't usually cheap unless you're doing it yourself. Chances are whatever you want to put in should get a full service/overhaul too. On carsales today GT's are listed for $6 - $10k... I'd put an engine swap into that same sort of range. I would absolutely not recommend spending any time or money on another twincharged engine. While the older GT's and the Polo's don't seem to have nearly the reported issues of the 118TSI Golf, it's not something I would consider a wise investment.
One option would be to simply drive it until it dies one day then worry about it. You could get some money back parting it out (or selling it as is), but this would otherwise be a loss you're simply accepting at some point in the future.
Otherwise, consider that you could sell it today then spend $10-$15k on lots of different Golf shaped options from MKVI even into MKVII's.
