Stronger boot strut & squeaky center console

    Hi all,

    I drive an 09 Jetta.

    1. I noticed that after a few months of use, the pneumatic boot struts don't seem to push the boot open anymore. They used to open 1/2 at a quick rate, then slowly open the rest of the way. Now, they just unlock, pop open and sit there with a small gap. Is there any way to increase the power of the pneumatic (if that's even the right term to use) strut or do I have to replace them? Any good recommendations? I heard from a mechanic that I have to watch out they aren't too powerful/strong. Are there ratings for these type of things?

Edit: I saw this thread. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112...highlight=boot Is there something similar for the Jetta? Is this the only way to improve the situation?

    2. The centre console has an annoying plastic squeak when I open/close it. Has anyone else experienced it? What's the best, most budget conscious way to get rid of it? I was thinking of spraying some WD-40, but I don't think that's the right kind of product for plastic? Not sure, so I'm asking.

Get your dealer to change the struts if their not doing what there supposed to do.
I only use Silicon spray on hinges and the like WD40 is only a water dispersant .

Thanks. I've got it booked in for them to look at another issue next week (the check engine light blinks when I use the cruise control stalk to increase the speed, acc/+). Funnily enough, they said that was an issue whereas an intermittent (i.e. I can't replicate it) 3 chimes when I insert the key to start the key is normal. Go figure.

So, I'll ask them about changing the struts and I'll look into purchasing some silicon spray too.

    cheers.

Note that the struts will not work as well when they are cold. Given you've only noticed the problem over the last few months, and the last few months have been winter, that may be the reason. Wait until it warms up a bit (or trying popping the boot in the midday sun) just to check its not just that.

thanks for the suggestion ian. the dealer had a look and decided the struts were indeed getting weakened prematurely.
they replaced it free of charge under warranty.

I wouldn't bother going to VW for the gas struts...... you will end up paying way too much.
Try some one like this Gas Struts - commonly known as gas springs, gas stays, gas lifts - Australia at least this way it's not only cheaper but you can then get the pressure you want to give that full automatic boot opening appearance!!!
