Wouldn't a 2.0 8v from a MK3 Golf be OK? It was a straight swap into my MK2 and I kept my 1.8 head and put it onto the 2.0 block.

I did a 1800 Short block from Jetta CLI. bored out to Fit 2.6 Caravelle Pistons ( Std 82.5mm ) ... Kept 1800 Crank and Rods..
made good power with a worked Carb head and Weber Carbs on golf

bolted straight on with no issues

    To get technical, Its gets you a 1897cc ( 1900 ) setup..
    With a 2.0l Crank, takes it to 1997cc ( 2.0l ) setup...

got 127kw with 233nm torque out of it on my 4door SA 1800 sport golf ( later model golfs ).
My 2 Door GTi had similar setup, only i had it up to 2091CC (2.1l) stroker with Tdi crank(Balanced and knife-edged) Stock rods and 82.5mm Pistons. head was skimmed 1.5mm ( on its last ) to get me a 12.6:1 Compression... ended up with 137kw and 312nm torque on that little 8v..

    That looks mint,

Found this "how to" forum post, pretty much tells all

    VWVortex.com - ***VW Fox 16v swap FAQ***

Just gotta get the donor car with the engine, might be hard in oz but it's a start,

Though just thinking if the 9a 8v bolts up to the Passat gearbox I have fitted the KR 16v head to this block before, hmmm and I'm guessing those 20v - 16v Audi motor are non existent in oz.
    the golf is not dead.

The 9a is a 16v engine so why would you put a KR head on it?
