    2003 Golf Timing Belt

    Hi Guys,

When is the best time to replace the timing belt on a 2003 Golf? The book states 120,000kms, is this leaving it a bit late?

    Cheers,

the reccomended time is at 80k - thats when i did mine

belt and waterpump are essential, however there are some other things under the timing cover such as tensioners etc which are advisable to change at the same time as you dont want to pull everythign apart later if something goes wrong

also make sure you get a pump with the metal impeller, the plastic ones crack...

have a look on vortex, theres a how to guide on there from memory

iv heard they can be expensive, subarus $1k+ and was freaking about my car, but the guy that did mine said its a load of crap, mine was below $400 for timing belt and everything else that service. (ill try find the reciept, may have even been less then $300? cant remember sorry) he said the only difference is that you have to spend a extra hour on a turbo'd engine. was that quote at a VW stealership?

maybe? i dont know if my specialist is a one off, i know he doesnt put dodgy parts in and what not as alot of euro car owners around here i know deal with him and none of us ever seem to have problems outside old parts dying, dodgy fuel and general services.

Luck enough in my beer slab box full of reciepts the 2nd one from him i pulled out was the timing belt service.

Labour on timing belt 2.5hrs $187.50
    timing belt $80.00+5freight
add gst and what not $299.75

and i got a diagnostic check and a few other things done in that time.

    So surely could get cheaper?

    Good luck!
