SUCCESS!: How to make a new key incl. transponder

Can anyone confirm which VAGCOM to buy ? I'm guessing that's the same one that everyone uses to check engine codes etc ?

I ask because I finally opened up the key that came with my car to see why it isn't working and discovered that the buttons on the transponder mainboard were broken off. I've now resoldered them back on.
It seems the transponder has not worked for the previous owner due to this.

Am I right in assuming I will need to go through this process to get the keyless entry system to work again? (getting sick of having to open my car like it is pov pack).

You only need software to pair to the immobiliser - which is already done if you can start the car. there is a simple procedure for pairing the remote transponder - have a google, sorry I can't help more but I'm on my phone.

There's a little confusion there, mostly just with the names.

Firstly, there's 2 separate parts that need coding in each flip key remote, both with a separate process/system. One is for the immobiliser (transponder chip), and the other is for locking/unlocking the doors remotely (remote transmitter).

The bit mentioned that was re-soldered is actually the 'transmitter' for the remote lock/unlock system, and will need to be programmed in with a VCDS if the above quick method doesn't work (or you can't make it work without 2 keys, etc.). It's good to do it with this VCDS method as you can 'erase' any other old remote pairings, and have yours as the only remote that can unlock your car. There is also a max number of paired remotes, which sometimes causes issues programming a new remote from too many old remotes programmed to the car, and erasing/clearing fixes that issue too.

The other bit, that is actually the transponder chip, is actually the tiny glass capsule that's glued inside the casing of the remote transmitter, and interacts with a radio frequency ring around the key barrel, and like mentioned, if it starts the car, and no other keys are near the key barrel, that is already paired and working fine... This is the same for standard and remote keys.

So for my 1.6 all i need is the parts mentioned in the first page? Ive got a key fob from a donor gti i can try and use.

Basic question: what do the original factory remotes actually look like? My daughter's Golf has aftermarket remotes and the button covers have fallen off. Does anyone have a link to a source? Thanks, Rob.

Hey Jonesy, It'll depend on which model car you have, they might have 2 button or 3 button remotes, the older ones have a slightly more rounded button in the middle, and the later ones the buttons go out to the edges of the casing..

Basically, the older 'rounded' button ones look like this (2 button and 3 button)..

Now, ignore the info below if you are aware that your current remote can't just be swapped for a factory remote..

So... those remotes above are all for Factory/OEM remote systems, where the remotes will only work with the correct Factory/OEM receivers, which are internal parts of some, NOT ALL, CCMs (Convenience Control modules).

So basically, if you currently have an 'aftermarket' remote (like the one below) there's an almost certain chance that your car doesn't currently have a CCM that will work with remotes, it just doesn't have ANY internals to deal with receiving ANY remote signals. And that's why a completely separate (although basic) aftermarket remote central locking system was added on:
1. Because you can't just add aftermarket remotes to a factory/different system, and
2. Because it looks like you have one of the factory CCMs that isn't a remote receiver.

Thanks kendog! Yes, the aftermarket ones above do look the same, except now I see even the metal ring has fallen off! :) I can see a little bit of the "CE" label on the back, but all the rest has worn off. Thanks anyway.

Hi it seems ok to programme the "Transmitter" for the remote lock/unlock system.
How do you programme the chip so car will start, or do you have to take you key to VW Dealer ( VW here in Brisbane want $90 to do this?)
I have seen a new key on ebay which comes with new circuit board, battery and chip for $55 Aus

Hey guys, after reading this thread and numerous others im still confused, i just picked up my 01 gti mk4, and both cobra keyless entry remotes are broken, i was wondering if it's possible to swap them out and program two new volkswagen keyless flick style remotes or am i stuck with the cobra ones? I'm just confused on part number, i think i need to get a 1J0 959 753 AM/DC remote/transponder but not 100%.
