same principle for stcok turbo'd steve.....a standalone has the ability to tune with the level of mods on your car.its not as hard as you think with obviously the right technician.

True True, I was basically like thinking of what Neil had said as it was a bolt on type of mod kinda thing.

Not to bag the standalones though I would just prefer to go with one of the bigger companies though. Don't forget that after tech support is the most crucial part thats what I would be looking for and also someone that would be close aswell.

seems o/s that people are actually altering the stock code (out of warrenty obviously as it shows up as a copyright infringement)without chip or flash....heard there is a crack code going around bittorrent..

now after discussing chips and standalones,they sound much more appealling(and easier)than hacking your stock code...:(

The aftermarket ECU adds rediculous complexity that you just don't need.

It'll need to be wired in and you'll probably still need to run the standard ECU for major functions like aircon and cruise control.(potential for ****up #1.)

It'll need to be tuned to suit your car, probably a lot hours on the dyno to get right (potential ****up #2)

Your a3, like mine, has an ECU that can be flashed rather than older a3s that needed a physical chip soldered on (ie - Drive into APR/GIAC/ETC dealer, they upload a tune onto your standard computer, drive out 10minutes later.). Means you save so much hastle and might be easier on your insurance.

The list goes on and on.

The only reason for which I could jusitify an aftermarket ECU is if I was doing BIG mods (huge turbo, cams etc) that I couldnt find a pre-packaged chip for. I'd rather someone elses car(s) do 1000 dyno hours for my engine tune. With that said, a couple of mates have aftermarket ECUs on their 1.8ts because they have big mods planned and they're pretty happy.

Economy isn't such an issue for me - if it was I'd drive a TDI. I want a chip for performance. In saying that - for everyday driving I too also noticed better economy. I'd imagine all tuners would be able to achieve this - this is something that's not going to be brand specific.

I know lots of people who have gone the GIAC route and are very happy. I also know people who have gone the APR, REVO and MTM route who are also just as equaly happy. They all represent great bang for your buck.

If i were you i wouldnt go with a gti. I'd go with something like a bora 4motion maybe? O wait, mine is going up for sale! Haha

Sure you can go GIAC, APR, Oettinger, REVO, NEUSPEED to name a few that do it for the mk4s they are good for the K03 turbos and also the K04.

However if I wanted to go for turbo or even big NA power in my VR I would go stand alone for the many things that can be done, and besides on a stock ECU in the VR you can only boost 6-8psi before overloading the ECU and thats not much.

Isn't the VR6 a N/A car ? So what has the Giac chip added to your car then, like 5kw ?
