Forgot to check oil, was down 1.5litres

So i stupidly hadn't checked my GTI's oil since i purchased it (15,000k's, or 9 months ago), and it's been overdue for a service for the last 5000k's and i've just been putting it off untill i can do it at the same time i need to do rego (stupid i know).

Anyway, i checked today and the dip stick came out completly dry
I hadn't noticed the engine getting noisy and it seems to have been running fine, so i'm hoping i haven't damaged my engine.

i went to an auto one shop, picked up a litre of 5w30 castrol edge, put it in, then the level was still below the hashed area on the dip stick. I needed another half litre to get it to the top of the hashed area.

How low do you think i went if that was the case? like serious engine damage low, or just smack on the back of the head low?
I've been meaning to check the oil for so long but for some reason i never seem to remember when i step out of the car. never again!

also, because of this, are there any partilcular things i should get the mechanic to check when i take it in?
it's now done just over 100,000 clicks.

and unrelated, i'm thinking my clutch might be starting to die, i don't find it's slipping on me, but in first gear, if i'm doing a slow smooth take off in traffic for example, even if i let the clutch out very smoothly, it likes to grab at the end in a strange way. so to counter it, i basically leave the clutch pedal just a bit shy of fully engaged and hold at that position, and just accelerate as per usual and the clutch grabs smoothly as it should. sort of hard to explain. if i'm giving it plenty of gas, it's no issue.
so will a new clutch likely fix this? and while i'm asking so many questions, how much roughly for a new clutch??

    Thanks

That’s really weird that you get that dry it doesn’t even say anything, that happened to me this weekend! I bought my car 2nd hand 2months ago and I haven’t checked it since and it was bone dry… i thought it must be broken because the oil light hasn’t come on and the car is running great… after reading this I will put a litre of shell 10-40 in it and see how she reads

Both you blokes need a good slap.

How dare you mistreat fine machinery in such a way

Firstly, the GTI is due for a service at 90,000, and you have run it to 100,000, which on the surface is 10,000k OVERDUE. That's probably why your oil level was low.

Guys, it's sooooo easy to check the oil level, really.

I know I know! But karma has it that the dipstick holder snapped when I found out so she got me back for it! And I’ll make sure I always carry a litre with me from now…check were weekly not monthly hahaha

Ps I wouldn’t be treating a GTI like that anything with a turbo needs double the amount of TLC, my SOHC is pretty tough old style engine so I think I got away with is
