Pod Filter questions

I’ve heard that POD’s can ruin MAFs, so I’m pretty worried about doing that. Rather not do a mod that’ll cause problems in the long run. Thanks Balkanac and Torque for opening my eyes about possible problems, and not let me get caught up on induction noise lol.. I’m a bit of a sucker for Induction noise, but big picture if the MAF which I’m worried of breaking.

Balkanac, what are some fairly good priced and recommended proper Cold Air Intake systems???

I’ve also considered the Panel Filter, not as much noise as I’d like. But safer approach problem wise for me anyways.. I know nothing about Diverter valves are they expensive? Easy to fit etc?

You Golf GTI comes with one stock. It is the black solenoid looking thing coming of the pipe that runs between your air box and your turbo, and has a smaller pipe running off it like a tail. You will probably know these better as Blow Off Valves(BOV's).
A Diverter Valve (DV) is similar to a BOV. Both these valves work on manifold pressure, and prevent compressor stall(a slowing of the Turbo's compressor turbine caused by compressed air in the inlet pipe between the turbo and intake manifold when the throttle butterfly closes on gear change or when your foot is taken off the accelerator).
This waste compressed air is expelled(in the DV's case) back to the intake side of the turbo when the DV is opened due to negative pressure(vacuum) in the inlet manifold.
In the cas of a BOV, the air is expelled to either the intake and atmosphere(in the case of a Dual Port BOV), or just to atmosphere.

That minikeg intake is tempting :-)

I'm thinking of doing what some others on the forum have done and run some piping from the stock airbox down the to the intake at the bumper.

wow thanks for all the info!! im assuming the DV is quieter than a BOV?
i can hear a faint noise with my stock DV wouldnt mind it being a little louder..

heres a few ideas for you.

Forge Splitter (50 recirc, 50 atmospheric) - wont throw any codes and will give you that desired sound your after if wanting so.

Forge/Bailey/Go Fast Bits Diverter Valve (Plumback 100%) - with a stock airbox very minimal sound, however accompanied by a 'intake' it'll sound as loud as a 'blow valve' almost.

AEM Intake is my pic (as attached with pic below of my engine bay) You can pick these up from Ebay but AEM is VERY expensive as they are a premium brand. (get on ebay, search "aem intake golf")

Alternatively you could buy a Chinese Intake which is a AEM ripoff which i dont see why it wouldn't be any different, however you'd want to get an AEM, Pipercross or any type of DRY Airfilter so you don't ruin your maf.

The potential damage to your MAF sensor being mentioned isn't strictly due to a pod filter as much as it is to an oiled filter. You can get oiled panel filters as well (and dry paper pods for that matter), and it's the oil in these filters which can, in theory, cause damage to your MAF if oil is sucked out of them into your intake and onto the MAF hot wire.

Irrespective, as indicated, it's illegal to fit a bare pod filter, and it's likely counter productive as it would just end up sucking in warm air anyway (and you'll potentially end up with less power).

I've had my GTI for a ~ 10 months now and it was fitted with a BMC intake when i purchased it. Im not sure how long it had been on there before i purchased the car, but i haven't had any MAF issues yet.

I've been running a POD on my GTI for over 2 years now without an issue.

I'm yet to dyno the car and do a comparison and am interested in getting a full cold air intake but get scared when I read things like "becuase the flter is below the front bar,be careful when driving through heavy rain!"

im lucky as well, im careful where i go and try not use any boost at all whilst going through rain. mind you i have 2x diff air vents, 1 open 1 fully closed (weather dependant .. yes im that particulate lol)
