R32 Starting Issues

Hey All

Just as of today, i have had issues where the R32 won't start first time round. It keeps trying to start but wont actually turn over. Eventually i've gotten it to start by having the foot on the accelerator and cranking the engine a little to have it turn over.

Has anyone come across this issue on their R32 or on the MK4 golf at all? Initially i thought it was a battery issue but before i got changing things was hopiong someone might have had this issue and might have a solution?

I was just looking at the codes we pulled from your car the other night. Temp sensor issues can cause hard starting I believe?

Hey Tim

Good thing i got you to check the car the other night ! This also crossed my mind as well.. but then from memory i remembered you saying when the weather got cold it could cause issues but it was pretty warm today hence why i thought probably it wasn't the source..

Is there anyway of testing whether it is the temp sensor that is faulty before going ahead and replacing it?

reminds me of breaking down 3 hours out of town in the rickity old work car last week. was the fuel pump. nrma knocks on the fuel tank under where the pump sits inside it to give it a kick start, and as we turn the key, it maginally comes to life... anyway not much help...

Definitely replace the temp sensor - chances are it'll be the early black one which were prone to failure. Replace it with a newer green one for about $70. I had this exact issue on my GTI and it fixed it.

Haha Mcdub.. reminds of a similar problem to that years ago on a turbocharged sss pulsar i owned. Had to give the fuel pump a whack every now and again to get it started too

I was reading up on that on the UK and US forums and was wanting to change mine to the green top sensor, just wasnt sure where to source it locally for a good price.

Could you let me know where you sourced the parts from or anyone who may know?

I think Tim had mentioned Imparts but that is on the opposite side from where i live. Preferably something on the east/south eastern side if there is any place anyone knows otherwise i may end up having to go to imparts...

yes mate, it should be depending on the trouble u want to go through. If you think they will be responsive than do it. Otherwise ust go to volkspower and get it done asap. but if its something bigger than u may want to press the issue with the dealer.

If the sensor is "black" anyway get rid of it even if thats not the problem this time as it will fail! Make sure the new one is green. Coolant sensor usually fails either when fully cold or when you have driven for about 10 mins to the shops, come out and takes about 2 mins to crank over before it fires. Good test is to pull off the connecter when it faults and then the ecu gets a base value which is usually closer to correct than the value the sensor is giving so the car starts straight away. The faults codes in the first posts are correct for replacement of the sensor. -VW-
