    Mk4 GTI model changes 1999-05

    Hi guys,

New kid on the forum here :p

I'm thinking about trading up from a 1995 Nissan Bluebird to a Mk4 GTI, and I was wondering what the significant differences between specific years were?

I recall reading that the range post-2000 had VVT, but I'm not sure.

Any difference in weight, kW output?

Basically, which would be the most bang-for-buck product? I'm a student so obviously money is a concern. I'll be realistic and say the car is a pipe dream at the moment, but... I like to dream.

    Cheers,

    Cam

Edit: Just reading the FAQ thread and there's a heap of info in there.

I guess my question now changes to, "What kind of price would you expect to sell your Mk4 GTIs for?" I place absolutely no faith in the figures on Redbook and Carsales and Drive

I'd say the illusive 180Hp VVt version would be the one 2 get but i heard you don't get that one in Oz Apart from that i think they all 150Hp only added advantage of getting a late model GTI would be some of the features, trip computer, nicer gear box linkage, shifts smoother etc. Basically they would have fixed any issues that they found in the earlier versions.

1998 - 1999 model GTI model on the ones I've seen don't have a trip computer, Gear box linkage is the same as a MK3 and some minor differences like the flaps on the mirror on the sun visor. older ones flip while newer ones slide. That's about all that i know about. The older ones might be cheaper to accquire but if those minor things don't bother you then go for it will still perform like the rest Later on you can always add the bits that are missing.

dont forget the older ones had recaros and the newer ones dont. the recaros have tonnes more bolstering and are much better seats or so i've heard.

Are these the leather Recaros? They look gorgeous :p

    Edit: Hmm, maybe they're not.

These are though, as far as I'm aware (though they haven't really been looked after).

P.S Is there a rule about image-hosting here?

don't forget the centre console cupholders are slightly different, they changed them slightly somewhere between 1999 and 2003

shrugs, the main things i noticed when i test drove the 1999 and then bought the 2003 were cosmetic stuff... 1999 had the recaros which were much more comfortable, only the ones i looked at were pretty badly faded... and 99 doesn't have a trip computer... they've already been mentioned though... did the 99 have cruise control? also i don't think the 2003 comes with a sunroof standard, though i've never seen one without...

These are the leather buckets in the A3, and without a doubt they'll be the same ones that were optional on the GTi.

dont mean to hijack, but does anyone know if the later model linkage can be put in an early model?

is this on the shifter end or gearbox end?

Its tricky as the gearbox end as well as the shifter end would need to be replaced as they completely different 2 the later models. I was told that a shifter kit may fix some of the issues like it being a bit sticky from 1 to 2nd and that notchy feeling when shifting. But i actually like the clicking into gear the later models don't do this and just slide into gear.
