    Red markers on 30 and 50 km/h

    Hi all,

Does anyone know why the 30 and 50 km/h markers on the speedo are red? I think my Dad's Merc has similar markings around the 50 km/h mark. Might be some kind of Euro speed limit thing maybe?

Here's a pic for reference (pic credit to Craig_the_German)

Max Speed per gear range. Every Beetle going back to the 50's has 'em.

I think you may have confused them with the diesel mk1, as these had the marker's & the gear to indicate this eg. 3rd had 3 dot's.

The mk4 1st gear goes way past 30 & second should go almost to 90.

I honestly don't know what the are for, but VW aren't the only one's who have this display. Mercedes have this too.

Have you checked in the owner's handbook?

The petrol golfs had the mark too at 50 Km/hr it's an indicator to not exceed that speed in first gear (changing up or down from memory). Pretty much every VW has the marks , some have marks for all gears, some just have the first one or two.

Pretty damn sure you're wrong Pete. Your idea might explain the red mark for 50km/h, but not 30. My car does at least 60km/h in first and about 105 in 2nd.

The marks are for common speed limits in Europe.

Oh, as said earlier my MK1 has several dots on the speedo to explain the maximum speed. This was needed because the diesels lacked a tacho.

I always thought that the 50kph mark corresponded roughly to the UK 30mph urban speed limit
    Dunno about the 30kph mark.

The dots on the Mk1 diesel speedo are maximum speeds in the gears.
