Question GTi Trip Meter won't reset

Long time reader, first time poster.
I have a MKIV '99 GTi. Since the last service I have not been able to reset the trip meter and hence cannot reset the service message.
The service agents have cleared the service message with what i believe is a vagcom. But I cannot confirm.
They have said I may need to replace the cluster or even the computer which I am sure is going to be expensive.
    Just after some ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

I have tried unplugging the battery overnight. Yes it did reset the trip meter, but my issue is that it does not reset using the button on the cluster.

    Any other ideas??

    Thanks again.
