Great thread. Can't wait to see the finished product!
Did you notice any braking improvement after fitting the Willwood setup ?
True.
Did you grab yours of Chester ? I see he had some up for grabs earlier in the year.
So after many many many moons.
Finally got CTS engine mounts.

Quick hit down the street and no more driveshaft on subframe action!
Hopefully the coupling didn't cop to much abuse. It's been sitting since Nationals waiting for the Engine Mounts, now we can have some fun.
Although thermo fans are still broken and thermostat housing leaks..
It’s still alive, been a daily driver for the last ~8 months or so.
Started getting it ready for the VW nationals a couple weeks out, change coilovers, remove airbags and sound deadening, APR intake, brake flush, finally wire up thermo fans, fix the leaking thermostat housing, replace the crack pipe and fit two sparco seats and rails I found on eBay one night!
Dirty fluid

Get to two days before, the finally fixed thermostat housing had caused the water pump to be the next weak link[emoji20]
Fortunately I had a new metal impeller pump sitting at home from my MK3 dream days.

Clutch was slipping prior but only in 4th, 5th and 6th thankfully never needed to be in the low/mid rpm range in the gears to make it be an issue.
New clutch and LSD on the way for the next round of fun.

Can confirm limiter in 1st - 2nd and 3rd sounds the BEANS
And bloody well done mate. For a shoe string budget car you are living the dream!!!!
Ladsssssss,
Car performed very well at nats!!!!! :D
Attachment 34155
Been having clutch slip since before the track day, finally started happening in lower gears, (2nd/3rd) so got a new clutch kit and wavetrac LSD Installed while the box was out.

Went to the drags on Wednesday night. Only got 3 passes in, the drive down from Newcastle was the break in.
Managed a 13.655 @ 100 on the first pass, 2nd pass something happened with traction control and it caused the car to bog even though it was off.
Third pass bettered my first pass with a 13.603 @101.84

Still shifting slow to at least get to the other end knowing there would be so few attempts possible.
Car is relatively power wise stock.
Carbonio Intake, dirty old pod filter
APR “tune”
Stock intake, full stock exhaust (bashed out cats)
18” CH’s
Weight reduction 1386kg’s driven
And 283,000km’s on the motor

Bit of an update:
Just been driving it to work and what not since the last post.
Installed a few new things along the way.
Competition Haldex controller, as much as everyone raves on about this things. I don’t think it has done much to the handling, nothing the LSD already took care of anyway. The best part would be how easy it steps the rear end out in 1/2 gears from a peel out. (In the wet[emoji24])
Also installed a Miltek resonated cat back, not my first choice in exhaust, but got it cheap!
Don’t have any photos of these as there isn’t much to see, and there’s already thousands of photos out there.
I also fitted a 034 billet dogbone Mount. Used dirty photo as I didn’t take any at the time!

More recently I went on a bit of an update in preparation of a bit more track work this year.
Starting with an external oil cooler. In the spirit of this thread, tried to do as cheaply as possible.
So I got myself a Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate (in hindsight pointless as it lets more oil pass through the cooler than it stops), and a random eBay cooler and hose kit.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...37c83c3f-1.jpg
I wanted to remove the factory exchanger, to do this without spending the extra money on the mocal cap, I cut down a standard oil cooler cap and carried the thread further up the rod.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...87ff26a5-1.jpg
I cut up an adapter fitting that come with the eBay kit to use as a sleeve inside the Mocal sandwich plate so that it wouldn’t be able to move around on the mating surfaces under pressure
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...db11fdd9-1.jpg
I cut up the factory reo, this served two purposes, to make room for the hoses to go underneath it and the front bumper and to shed some more weight!
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...49b7bce2-1.jpg
Kept it as I’ve ditched them before and the bonnet is a pain to close, so the factory mount is still used for the bonnet latch.
Instead of making a useless bracket (nowhere to mount to without having a large bulky bracket) I bolted the core straight to the factory radiator shroud, this wouldn’t be possible if the a/c condenser was still in place.

Sandwich plate fitted

I just used water caps to block off the coolant ports left on the crack pipe and block

And finally found some 17x8 5x100 light wheels.

Wedssport TC105N wrapped in 235/40 Nitto NT01.
I also fitted a carbon front lip from a 06’ WRX/STI hard to see in photos but looks pretty different in the eye and fits well considering!
I also had Ian at FIS Cluster Care install a ColourMFA to replace the old hardly working display. (Sorry for the blurry pic!)

Looking good H.
Getting plenty done. Give me them CH now you have no use for them!
how are the aero fittings going on the cooler - any problem with weeping oil? mine have been a headache.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...993fce07-1.jpg
Funny you mention that Sam.
One completely let go and lost pretty much all the fluid after a couple days.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Lost fluid like you lost cliffo?
oh no that sucks man. Was it the hose coming off or the threaded fittings?
After a weeping fitting on the mocal sandwich plate I found that the aero fitting supplied with the plate was wrong. The fitting had an NPT thread but the Mocal wanted a straight thread (I think BSPP) with washers like these: Stat-O-Seals - O-Rings & Washers - Fittings & Adapters - Aeroflow Performance. The NPT probably only had the top two threads actually engaged in the plate and could have been stripped easily if I'd gotten stuck into it and was nowhere near able to form a seal.
Engine ok?
Was a bit of user error.. was in a rush in between meetings and noticed the fitting weeping, so nipped it up, hose binded and kinked, built up pressure and the fitting was the first thing to let go...
I have NPT fittings in the BSP ports and no issues there. Hopefully get replacement hose next week, or I’ll have to make some - $$
Noticed it fairly early I think, but there was still plenty of oil in it and drove it home fine with a bit of roadside fixing.

That's a scare. Sounds like it might be ok then which is good. Did you end up hillclimbing at Ringwood at the start of the year?
so that's where the gearbox is......
Got out to the local hillclimb track today.
Started off a bit miserable but by the first runs the track had dried and the clouds had parted. By the second session the track had some heat in it.
Car went well all day minus the issues I knew it had. Being the brakes are spongey after a good press and the Haldex is intermittent.
I am at a loss for the pedal feel, going to start chucking parts at it, starting with the master cylinder.
The Haldex led me astray once mid corner and caused me to clip a cone, which incurred a time penalty stuff my PB.
Dropped the front tyre pressure to accomodate for the non functional rear end and ended up with a 73 flat. Good enough for class win and 16th out of 53 outright.

So good.
Wonder what the brakes are doing, can you get abs happening?
Yeah that can happen. Mine basically didn't work with air at the abs.
Hook at powerbleeder up and trigger the abs via vagcom. Then bleed each corner like normal
Nice runs at Ringwood mate. I've never done A4 where you come back down through turn 2. Think I'd get lost first time through.
Thanks!
Yeah was a bit worried going into first run as they didn’t allow track walks and I was one of the first cars up the hill so wasn’t able to watch more than 2 cars go.
First time was a 78.xx so was just cruising and finding out where to go!

were you in padstow on I think thursday?? I saw a blue r32 on my way home from work.
Went to the drags last night, was meant to be in my other car but didn’t get the tune sorted.
That said, the R32 was 35KG lighter and different wheel and tyre combination. So should have made for a marginal improvement.
Wrong.
13.611 @ 101.40mph
Car got to the 60ft faster than any other pass, but was bogging down after 2-3 and 3-4 shifts which most certainly cost it going 13.5xx

any thoughts on why it was bogging down?
Shame it didnt run quite right after making the trip down to Syd mate. Give me a holler next time you go (if you dont mind me tagging along) as i wouldnt mind running my car down the strip.
I was going to head down a few weeks ago with a friend who has a Mk7 R but was flat out at work and couldnt take the time off.
True.
Na the GTI is long gone. The GTI would have burnt its clutch (stock clutch) on the sticky 1/4 mile track. It held ok on the road but i knew it would be a different story on a track.
I've got a Lexus IS-F now so i want to see what the N/A 5.0L V8 can do. I've done a few things to it so it should be ok for mid/high 12's.
With the VW Nationals Supersprint next weekend I finally got around to fitting some hopefully preventative explosion pieces.
First off was fitting a MK5 baffled sump and oil pump. Oil pump due to shallower MK5 sump. With the baffled sump I also gained the level and temp sensor, which with some wiring I can view on the colourMFA display
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...67985b76-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...9dd0f097-1.jpg
Next was changing out the oem 120a alternator for a 90a unit from a 4 cylinder MK4 and lightweight pulley I had from my old 12v VR6.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...7980bab9-1.jpg
I swapped alternators in an effort to get some weight off the nose of this thing, switching alternators saved 1.9KG
I also got a smaller battery and moved it into the back of the car. The battery and new bracket was only slightly lighter, around 6KG, but I mostly did this for the same reason as above, to get some weight off the nose. The battery and mount that was on the car weighed in at 16kg, new setup is roughly 9-10kg including the additional wiring required. Totalling 18KG off the front, should have a noticeable improvement!
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...dd4501ec-1.jpg
With the front end off to change alternators, I took the opportunity to change intake manifolds, finally getting rid of the badly black painted one. This snowballed a bit and with the manifold off I finally got rid of the mess of hoses hidden on top of the hot exhaust manifolds.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...b644f02b-1.jpg
The above was all able to be removed by simply moving the coolant ball to the passenger side of the bay. 2 new hoses, extend the 2 coolant level sensor wires and a bracket was all that was needed.
I also used a MK3 1.8L hose to remove the ‘T’ piece that had been blocked off for the aux radiator. Aim of all of this was just to eliminate all of the potential leak joints.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...a1673e33-1.jpg
After the last track day, I knew that the cooling of the brakes was a serious issue that needed to be addressed. I started with some plans to modify the dust shields to fit a duct, but I eventually opted for their complete removal. In addition I fitted some brake ducts drawing air from the big R32 bumper vents.
I made some ‘L’ brackets and nutserted the chassis legs to be able to bolt them securely in place, especially with how close everything in is, to crank pulley, driveshafts, end links and tyres.

Now I’m still not 100% happy with how they are attached to the control arms, but it was the most sensible option I could think of. After a road test there are no issues with them moving or rubbing so for now they’ll stay as is.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...2efbb0f2-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...b77f14f3-1.jpg
Sitting 50mm back from either brake disc a quick test with the leaf blower showed good flow into the centre of the disc.
Last piece of the puzzle for now was to add some bracing. Scored from a TT, I installed some more nutserts into the subframe and fitted the lower subframe brace
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...4a26d929-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...f4a0f5d0-1.jpg
Bit of a brain fart on my end, the upper strut brace wouldn’t fit without notching it, or removing the bonnet strut bracket. I chose to cut the brace because 1. I got them for free, 2. The bolt holes look to be in the same spot as the 8L S3 so if I ever end up with a strut brace from one it’ll just bolt back in.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...76a860fd-1.jpg
I also tided up some of the wiring and wrapped some up in some left over braided that I had, no more exposed wires! Sort of.
