    Do all 1.6L mk4's have trans/gearbox issues

Looking at a 1.6 03' 80000km mk4 automatic. Do these have transmission issues or is it just the manuals?
I was supossed to look at it today but after reading on here that ppl are having issues with them, I decided not to go. But if these are not affected- then I will definetly get it. It's in great condition, full vw service history & one owner + greeenlight approved dealer. I want to go get it tomorrow coz its a good price & I don't wanna miss out.

Mate they all dont have the gearbox issues. Dont let what you read put you off. As a tech i have looked at 1000,s of these here and the Uk and only a few had the issues. Remember this is an enthusiast forum and you will get to hear some of the scary stuff. Mate log onto any forum and you will read something nasty about any vehicle. I would reckon the car you are looking at has an 020 box and in my time i have repaired about half a dozen. Not many hey. Mate dont let it put you off

I suppose the easiest way to get it checked out is to take someone (maybe from here?) who knows their way around the 1.6's and knows about the issues and possible symptoms that can suggest danger...not that I disagree with them, but I just think you won't get as good a response from someone paid to do that for cars in general, because this is a specialised sort of issue lol..

I agree with that statement, recently i had a friend who purchased an Audi from Melbourne after a report and it had a judder on take off, report states Engine mounts worn. Hmmm, checked vehicle on arrival here in Qld, roadtested and found the lock up clutch in Mutitronic Gearbox knackered, New Tranmission reqd , and they dont come cheap. Another a Mk3 Golf tested up here found to have airbag fault- light stays on for around 4 secs and goes out??????? Hmmm this is meant to happen it autochecks and goes out. If there was a fault the light would stay on - A no brainer. The same report failed to miss a set of torn wiper rubbers.

There's a story of an NRMA vehicle inspection a while ago on a RWD car that failed to notice a broken tailshaft that had dropped onto the ground at one end...
    Nothing to see here...

The NRMA dont do em anymore, they get another company to do it on their behalf.

I havent heard of problems with the dif in an Auto. They are reliable.
Its mainly the manual DUU gearboxes that have problems and as Jimmy says, they arent all affected. I have had 3 that have sheared the rivets here, not many eh?
I used to drive my Mk4 hard from new and touch wood, that hasnt had a problem.

how about the 1.9 diesel 2006 auto DSG? any sort of 'usual' issues? I don't know much about them. I drove it today & found it sort of strange on take off (but i've never driven a 1.9 diesel, only a 2l).

I've got about 22000 to spend (would like to spend less). What do you guys recommend? I definetly want a golf. I dont really do 'country km's' as such but love the economy of the diesel.
I need something reliable with good re-sale value

I just want to find something already.. getting sick of looking around.
