    Something to check

    Hi All,

After owning the Golf for since last August, I thought it time to do a little bit of maintenance ie. rotate the tyres, check brake pads, general under car checks.

After swapping the front wheel with the rear on the passenger's side I went to do the same thing on the drivers side. When I had removed the drivers side front wheel, I was having a look at the brake pad thickness, ball joint boots etc for wear and noticed that the brake hose "didn't look quite right"

I checked it against the left side and found that the drivers side brake line was going around the strut the wrong way. In fact it had been pulled tight against the strut during turning and had worn into the hose and strut and was pulling on the cable running to the ABS sensor. See the first pic.

It looks like the previous owner had the brakes done up not long before I bought the car and when reassembling the calipers, passed it around the strut the wrong way.

It was an easy job to undo the caliper mounting bolts (7mm allen key...odd size) and pass the caliper around the other side of the strut. see the second pic.

If I had not picked this up, there was a very real possibility of the brake hose rubbing through on the strut causing the loss of brake fluid and possible accident.

I just thought that if this has happened on my car, it might not be a bad idea to check your brake hoses next time you have the wheels off.

A simple mistake that any FOOL could have made. Like you say, lucky not to have pulled the line apart and had a nasty accident.
