Golf Windscreen Wiper Madness!
Hi all - was driving home in light rain the other night and had the windscreen wipers on intermittent when they decided to go continuously for a minute or so ... They settled down again so I just thought the gremlins were out.
Then last night, I was driving to see someone and half way through my journey, on they came again - no rain, though heavy dew - and refused to stop. Even though the switch was in the "off" position, I tried all different combos of up, down, intermittent, with absolutely no effect on the wipers whatsoever - apart from making them go faster.
Later in the night, I had to drive home with the wipers going the whole way as I couldn't determine which fuse would stop them and after pulling out the likely looking ones, they were still going.
I went out to check this morning and sure enough, I turn on the car and the wipers start. Aaaargh!
Questions:
What is likely to short out in the wiper assembly?
Where are the electrics located for the wipers?
Would this throw a fault code that could be diagnosed with VagCom?
Since they keep going, am I just removing the wrong fuse - even though the diagram shows it to be for the wipers?
Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.
Cheers.
UPDATE:
Found the fuse to stop the wipers - (the diagram mirrors the fuses) - strangely, the rear wiper fuse stops the front wipers from moving ... This got me thinking and I checked the rear wiper assembly. Sure enough, the gromit that seals the wiper hole was not put back properly when my rear window was replaced. Hence, water has been leaking into the rear wiper assembly ... Any thoughts on whether this will dry out and resume "normal" operations?

I would certainly give it a go.....if you can take the rain affected unit off and dry it inside near a heater you'd be surprised what comes good.
I had a portable phone at work that maintenance dropped into a container of coolant and it hadnt worked for weeks - it's finally come good and seems to be working fine now, though how long it will last is anyones guess!

Update 2:
Thanks for the response Gravey.
Had the boot lining off and the rear wiper assembly exposed to the sunshine today for about 4 hours - took the car in to the window place and they removed the rear wiper assembly (with the old gromit still attached), took the gromit from it and placed it in the window where it belongs, then re-assembled everything so it's water tight as it should be now.
Tonight I put the fuse back in and everything seems okay so far.
Phew!
