Weird transmission behaviour 2008 Multivan 6 speed auto

    G'day all,

In the last week, I have noticed some odd behaviour with the auto.

When off thottle and back on throttle in drive (more noticable around the suburban streets in the lower gears), there is a distinct delay/hestitation and very slight clunk whilst picking up again in drive. Not turbo lag or engine flat spot or engine/transmission mount issues. No external loss of transmission fluid.

At 55,000Ks, is this a sign of an Auto about to cost me many thousands? Maybe a sticky solenoid in the auto?
Any initial thoughts appreciated before heading to the dealer to check for fault codes.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Get the ATF changed at good AT specialist in your area. He should also be able to check for any faults.

Thanks Transporter. I had planned to get this done at next service or one after.

Smooth changes whilst in motion and engaging drive or reverse stationary. But Noticeable delay/slightly hard shift when off accelerator/on accelerator crawling along in the lower gears.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Doesn't sound good... hope for your sake we won't be adding another failed a/t to the growing list. Mine failed with very similar km's and VW came to the party with a 50% goodwill claim even though it was out of warranty. A fluid change is unlikely to help if internal components are already worn. Make sure they check for clutch material in the fluid.

Might be a long shot, but try resetting the TCM.

    Best of luck.

Hi Bluefin, I have done the TCM reset. No different. It is very specific. Goes in to reverse smoothly, goes into drive smoothly and changes through the gears smoothly, takes off from the lights smoothly, no slippage. Distinct delay/hesitation (be it for a second) when foot off accelerator and back on acceleration again when in motion.

I will need to book it in to first ascertain any fault codes. Like you I reckon a fluid/filter change wount make any difference and particuarly at low ks. Might also be something related to throttle off/on position that impacts a delay in the auto rengaging in the particular circumstance. Might be a dodgy solenoid in the transmission valve body...but all guesses at present.

I will let you know the outcome.

    Thanks,

    Scott

I'd get it checked out, maybe get it serviced by someone that knows what they are doing.
I am whispering because I don't want Howard to see this.....fuel to the fire about VW autos and DSG's

Keen to know what the solution is, this has been happening to my auto for awhile now. Basically when slowing down for give way signs, and then taking off when not completely stopped. Bit of a delay shifting into gear and feels like revving a manual car in neutral.

I've noticed it more in the morning on the way to work when the weather is cold...

Hi Silver C as you would have noticed VW autos are not on my christmas card list ours has also given us some moments as described by Lemmiwinks and your self , the main difference is that ours gives a solid thump sometimes when changing up or down from 4th to 5th coupled with loss of drive like its in neutral turn off and on and its fine again but ours is 130000 kays so maybe I shouldn,t feel so bad .

Thanks all. I have yet to get it check out for logged faults. But it would seem similar (but not exact) to what Lemmiwinks is experiencing. Also most like a DSG delay!!! My does it cool or warm. I have a 500k trip on the weekend. Will see if there is any change for the worse.

    Cheers,

    Scott
