Sump cracked. Worried about sump pick up

I wouldn't be too concerned about the pick up, from memory it had a bit of room.

It's a reasonably easy task. There is one or two bolts that are real tricky to get too though. (I used an old bonnet prop, bent to shape with a socket on the end to get them) but very much DIY able.

Defiantely take the time to get something welded onto the bottom of the 'new' sump, cheap insurance. I think I had pics in my diesels thread, mine wasn't nearly as heavy duty as pete's, but worked never the less. ( I think Pete's one would be better though!)

I know it is in pretty bad taste considering your pain but i'm pissing myself laughing at this considering the proud profile avatar you have about how low the mk1 is, Sometimes that low should be for show mate heh heh heh otherwise check out the wreckers and add extra plating to the sump and ensure it braces to the actual top of the sump where the bolt holes are so the plates are reinforced to the actual block.

Best thing i ever did was get a proper east-west (mk2,mk3) sump like in Pete's pic and send it to Alexg to get it 'bomb proofed' as he called it.

I dont think i have a pic of mine but its atleast a 10mm thick steel plate welded over the whole bottom of the sump and being Alexg the finish on it was epic, at the moment its scratched up but its taken a few hard wacks and not even close to a dint.

The oil pick up is heeps far away from the bottom of the sump so that should be fine.

Its easy as to change the sump aswell, only too about an hr or so the frist time and taht includes cleaing. The trickest part is geting to the bolts on the gear box side.

I would keep a bottle of oil in the car untill you get it fixed, youd be suprised how much can drip out in a short time.

No bad taste at all mate. I know that low stance comes with its negatives. Its kinda why my mind set is 'when, as apposed to if I get my next defect' :D

Cheers Spyda. So I take it the mk2/mk3 sump is the same as the mk1? Only thing is, there is a mk1 at the wreckers (westall) that I might look at this weekend.

As far as i know all 8v sumps are interchangable. There are a couple of SEATs at a wreakers near me, where abouts in melbourne are ya?

South East mate (Glen Waverley). I might be able to sort out the sump issue by a few kind people from the wanted section though.....

If ya want a Seat sump go check out Centre Rd wreckers. I was there about a month ago and counted more than 8.

Is that the Seat's that are MK3 based? Did they come with 1800's and 2000's? Is the sump/block the same all round?I'm going to do the same thing eventually.
