My golf is a rain gauge ..50mm 2 day

So my Golf had 50mm of water sitting in the rear passenger footwells where should i be looking for it coming in? Does'nt look like the door seals as the carpet on the sills were dry. It was reversed in with the rear facing down hill

windscreen seal, rear window seal. if the rain-tray drains are blocked it could even leak in through the fresh air plenum. but really, its usually the windscreen seal.

also can sometime follow electrical wires thorugh the firewall.

if the windscreen frame has any rust perforation in it the rain will seep around the seal, check fuse box / relay plate for water damage ( any wierd electrical shiz happening ??) ditto for the fixed side windows ( 2 door) and hatch glass., missing rubber seal tubes from the hatch to the body also let in water as do dead seals on the backside of the tail lamp assemblies.

get in the car and have someone outside spray the hose on it...
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    haha, still does that!

when i replaced the front windscreen seal there was no rust holes underneith it so we put a rust treatment on it to keep it that way. and it was a ****en tight fit to get the screen and new seal back in, took 3 people!

i reckon its the hatch lid window seal. my torana did the exact same thing and that was the problem. and that seal is old and nasty.

    cheers

I have decided not to drive my mk1 in the rain and park it under cover and if I need to leave it out put a car cover on it (even if I am parking it on the street in the rain in the city, haha). I hate leaky cars, but have come to live with this in the mk1.

    Ditto.
I just thought leaks must have been a factory option...

Ah given the responses, perhaps what you need to focus on is out how to let the water back out?
I had a Camira (I know!!) that had a leaking headlight box.
Every time it rained the thing would start to fill up, couldnt work out where it was coming in, so I drilled a 2 MM hole in the bottom of the perspex, too small to be noticed; problem solved.

This may not be where it's coming from, but you might want to check it out anyway,

Look under the front wheel arch, and follow the aerial cable. The cable goes through a big hole in the front wheel arch.
Usually they have a rubber grommet around it but sometimes they come out/perish. On a wet day water pours straight into the passenger
side, just above the fuse box... I believe this is a major cause for faulty fuse boxes in mk1s and also rust in the floor.

    Goodluck.

haha yeah this is pretty common, you need to get in there right after it's rained and look for water marks and runs...
Another common problem is water coming through the fire wall, i.e. in places like steering coloum, clutch cable, etc.

I had this problem, the water came through a leak in the rain tray, then into the cabin through the clutch cable hole as there were some cracks.
Bit of silicon and all was well
The smell of wet carpet does get a bit old after a while... haha!
